I need to replace the US Coast Guard Capcity Inspection placards on my 1973 22.2 I am not sure that I am using the right name for these but it is the small aluminum plate mounted on the port side in the stern on the ventilation enclosure. I cannot read the one on my boat. Thanks, Peter

I think what you are referring to is the Hull Identification Number(HIN),similiar to a VIN on an auto. The BIA capacity plate is usually near the helm. The HIN# is indicitive of that hull and that hull only(as far as I know?).Sometimes you can take a piece of thin paper and a pencil to rub off the numbers,if they show up....

You are correct, it is the HIN Plate that is so worn that it cannot be read, what should I do? At this point it is nothing more than a piece of aluminum.

Mine is the same way.  I plan to drill out the pop rivets, re-stamp the number from the registration with a hand number stamp set, then put it back, probably with small SS screws.

The shops that make the little engraved nametags and desk name holders can engrave you an aluminum or even stainless steel plate for a minimum amount of $.

I have a 73 22-2 and the hull identification number is located on the outside of the transom and is molded in, it's not an aluminum plate.  Ppem45 is correct, the tag is the Coast Guard Capacity Plate.  As I seem to remember from my last boat, it gives max hp, persons and maximum weight.  Last season the local marine patrol did a routine inspection of my boat.  They said that it wasn't uncommon for an older hull to have the yellow and black paint worn off of the tag.  I asked where I could get it replaced and they said to try and contact Aquasport.  (I guess that's not happening)
If I get more information, I'll pass it on.  At very least, you now know where your HIN # is.
