Trolling Motor suggestions for '76 170
« on: January 18, 2016, 06:58:35 PM »
Hey gang.  I'd like to hear your thoughts for pinpointing the best bow mounted trolling motor for my '76 170.  Though I prefer to have a transom mounted electric, this wouldn't be effective for the type of fishing I do.  There isn't too much space on the bow platform to mount, but I've found a few pics online of those who have.  So it's doable.  Recommendations for thrust?  I figure it will also require an long shaft because of the bow rise.  Thanks.

I am going to put a 80# 60" Minn Kota iPilot on mine when it's done - in the front.  I had a 50# on the transom and in a stiff wind you could almost make some headway.  A 80# will throw you out of the boat if you're not careful.  Seems like it'll pull your boat at 10+ mph :great02:
A transom mount has to swing the back of the boat around to turn, a bow mount will move the front to where you want it and then you steer straight to move on.  There is a removable plate (RT-17 I think) that you mount on the cap to 1) raise the motor up an inch and even hang it over the cap if needed for clearance and 2) allow you to remove the motor if you wanted to.
