Explorer 225 (1999) wiring, Gas Gauge & Gas Sender
« on: April 25, 2016, 09:14:18 AM »
All,  does anyone have a wiring diagram for this boat?  My fuel sender unit is not sending anything to the gauge.  I have tried to senders and two gauges, therefore I believe I have a wiring issue.  It appears the wiring come from the tank, goes back into the PVC pipe with other wires to the back of the boat.  However, I have not had a chance to track these down, wondering where they go.

Earlier, I had tried to confirm a continuity test with the wire from the sender unit (#7 I believe, pink wire) to the wire harness plug in the console with no luck.  I am thinking there is either a break, short or lose connection someplace.

Thanks in advance for any help you can provide.

There us no wiring diagrams for these boats. Did you try grounding the pink wire to see if you guage reacts? It should peg full. Check to make sure you have a good ground at the sender and the tank. Also try grounding the sender terminal on the gauge itself to make sure the gauge works.

No, when I placed a ground on the wire, nothing happened.  Where does this tie into the ignition switch to get power?  I believe that might be where I have the issue with a connection point.

The gauges are powered off the engine harness and are powered when you turn on the key.  The are daisy chained together with spade connectors so if all your other gauges are working odds are you have a corroded power connection issue for the fuel gauge (or Ground).  You have to unscrew and tilt down your panel so you can see the connection.  I believe the purple wire is the keyed power lead for all the gauges.  There is a ground buss located behind the panel too.

Here is a pic of my panel opened up.

Note the big blue plug in the top center of the picture.  That is the main power feed for all your house power circuits. (Lights, pumps, accessories etc).  Over time that plug corrodes and losses connection causing low voltage and loss of power for all your house power. If you haven't cut it out and replace it with a 8 gauge butt connector.

Here is my panel after I replaced the big blue plug and replaced the daisy chain of power feeds for the breakers.
