Replacing Gas Tank on a 81 222 CCP
« on: August 12, 2014, 10:01:49 PM »
I thought I'd better start a new thread on  this.....I'm going to replace the gas tank on my 1981 CCP 222. The difficulty for me is that I can't just pop the console off and take measurements of of the old one. The boat is at my in-laws in Westport MA, and I'm in Sydney, Australia. So I figured I'd get one fabricated ahead of time and drop it in when next I'm in the USA........ which could be in 9 months time, or longer.

Anyways, I've put preliminary feelers out to Phil @ Alloy Metal Works and Luther's Welding in Bristol, RI hoping that they would have done a tank for this "specific" model before. i.e. 222 CCP. (I note that some here have had tanks done for 22-2 CCP (pre 1981), like Capn' John (Gone Fission) but I can't find anyone that has done the later model i.e. 222 CCP).

In an ideal world I would assume that the 22-2 CCP tanks would be the same as the 222 CCP's (could they have made their model #"s anymore confusing?), given how few changes were made between models, but, I bet they aren't..... the same that is.

So in a nutshell, 2 Questions:

1. Would a gas tank from a 22-2 CCP be the same as a 222 CCP's?

2. Has anyone had a tank fabricated for a 222 CCP?

Can anyone shed light on this? Thanks in advance.

Just a thought... But is there anyone you know or a good local marina that can take 1/2 a day and get the tank out for you to document specs? I think that would be the safest way to go. Wish I were closer I would gladly help.

Appreciate the notion to help if you could. That's what I love about this forum.

There is an excellent local Marina (F.L.Tripps) at Westport Point MA where I get some mechanical work done but the boat is winterised (I know!...in August!!) and wrapped up.

See what I mean?

It'd be a major PITA for my elderly father in law too.

In a perfect world it'd be easier if I could order it, have it waiting for when I turn up and drop it in. Like I said...in a perfect world.

Hi,

They SHOULD be the same, but would hate for you to go on that assumption and the new one not fit.

Phil is FAST. Advise you wait 'till you're home and measure, then fab.

Best wishes :thumright:

OK Wood, this is what we do know.

Tank capacity is 85 gal. so tracking down the size shouldn't be too hard.

My original tank was made by a company called Florida Marine Tanks (FMT) that was once located in Miami Lakes but now is located in North Carolina. Model #FMT AQS 85A.

I placed a call to them requesting the specs on this model. We'll see.

Also, check this thread.

Page #2 shows the removal. This model does not have a deck coffin so you will need to remove yours to "flip the coffin".

More to follow.

We also know that the same tank (again we are assuming it has never been replaced) fits the 222 Express Fisherman so you again could try Phil at Alloy on this model.

Still, in rereading CJs tank replacement thread, his is an 85 gal. tank. That is the standard model for CCPs that came with that size. Phil made that tank so I'm thinking you can only get closer by actually pulling the existing one you have. I'd bet the farm it would be the same size.

PS....FMT did return my call but refuses to release the cut sheet unless an order is made and paid for, which is understandable. They did state that the cost would be $823 before tax and shipping.

Good luck.

Outstanding stuff you guys. I shall try Phil at Alloy Works regarding the 222 Express Fisherman,  I can't find CJ's tank replacement thread. Do you have a link?

Its nice to know I can just order it from FMT as another option. Thank you.

Great post from seven years ago. Love how CJ comments on held moisture from the factory install. Exactly the same point Pascoe made a few years later.

Don't foam it in...let an aluminum tank breathe.

Hi Everyone. Hope the Northern Hemisphere Winter is soon coming to an end for you. It looks like it has been particularly brutal this year, especially from down here.

I'm going to kick of my gas tank project again and since the reconfiguring of the website I can't get any of my old links in this thread to work. Can anyone kindly give me contact details for Phil at Alloy Metal Works? Also the thread that CJ is mentioned in above. Anyone got a link to that? Thanks in advance.

Good to see you back at it Wood. :thumright:

Check the links now. They are repaired. I have been slowly plodding through the site, moving threads and updating links as I go. I'll be dead and gone before everything is done so if you come across anything, just let me know.

Good luck.
