Towing a 22-2 half tower with an explorer- thoughts...
« on: March 07, 2015, 11:24:42 AM »
Doing a little car shopping lately- finally getting rid of my 2500HD. Im looking at Tahoes and Explorers. I dont have any doubts about the Tahoe's abilities, but Im not totally sure about the Explorer's.  I previously had and explorer I towed a 13' Boston Whaler and. 17' ski boat,,, bit nothing with the wind resistance of a half tower.
Longest tow Id have is probably Fort Myers to the Keys once or twice a year.

Anyone have experience towing a "larger" boat like a 22-2 with an explorer, ranger, sport trac (basically the same vehicle).

Also I have a tandem axle aluminum trailer.

Thanks!

Hi Chris,
Here's the specs for the early 70s 222. http://www.classicaquasport.com/gallery/showphoto.php?photo=2732&title=as-22-2-brochure2-c1970s&cat=555
so figuring boat at 1800, motor - maybe 400, plus fuel and gear - maybe 3500 Lbs total?  That is the normal class 2 hitch rating so you are fine there.  I would think if you can find a small V8 or a large v6 you should be good to go.  I pull my 230 with a Tundra with 4.7L V8 and it pulls it fine.  The boat alone is 3900 lbs.  I've pulled it up a pretty scary ramp down south and it pulled it up fine without putting it in 4x4.

Chris, hope all is well in your neck of the woods.  It should pull it fine but going from a pickup to an SUV there is going to be a big difference. IMO pickups are great tow vehicles due to their long wheel base.

My  :2Cents:  go with the Chevy.
