Exhaust noise

Looking at a 29 tournament master which has the exhaust coming out the sides about midships. It would appear running on plane they would be out of the water. Does this make it noisy for the helmsman?. How about a diesel with no mufflers? Might want to convert to diesel in the future and suspect space for mufflers might be limited since exhaust pipes would have to be enlarged which would require an ever larger muffler. Only way to answer the question about the 29 would be to take it out for a spin.

Any engine will be loud without a muffler.  Maybe best to talk to a marine diesel engine rep. to get some ideas about mufflers and the space they require.

Jim, good idea. Thursday going to sea trial the boat--flying from Fl to NY to do so and am just trying to get smarter about that particular model boat. I have 31 Chris Craft Commander Sports Express now and one can carry on a conversation up on the bridge. Hope can do the same with an Aquasport while standing right on top of the engines. Not to conjoin two threads but if the boat is gas you may wind up having to install a separate diesel tank for the genset.

Many modern boats use side exhaust outlets.  They usually reduce noise and also cut down on exhaust fume return into the cockpit.  Most use the same type wet mufflers that are used on rear exhaust outlets.  Side exhausts are also helpful when backing down.  Given the choice, I would opt for side over rear - but everyone has their preferences!

A local boat owner had 8.2 detroits in his 29 aquasport but didn't have room for mufflers. Wore ear plugs. I think I have room but the side exhausts are underwater which is a problem. Believe would have to install some sort of siphon break in the system which will be difficult.

a smaller AS owner so can't talk that intelligently about that model, but if u can afford the scratch for the conversion it seems like a no brainer. The price of running deisels is certainly now more cost friendly, and the production of fuel as well as the politics/tensions attached to the producing areas will likely be there long after we won't be.
    There's an old timer in the marina i work in that runs a 95' Tiara express model, w/ twin turbo deisels that he swears the fuel burn is 6.3gph at 20 knots. I've never been on his boat so i can't say whether he's full of it but he swears the key is to never punch it so the turbo's kick in. Even if he's off by a bit thats awesome fuel burn. If your coming up here from FLA this must be serious so keep us posted!!

Seatrialed Aquasport 29 tournament master with twin yanmar 240HP diesels. Exhaust did have mufflers-exhaust noise not noticeable at the helm, since engine noise, With roof overhead and standing on top of the engines, was louder. I am going to have to do some soundproofing. I did buy the boat, now have to get it from Islip NY back to Florida. fighterpilot

JimCt-I thought about running her home but it is a haul from L.I. NY. Not sure I want to do that in a strange boat. And I do have a lot going on at home right now. Got to get my boat ready for sale, go to Bristol for a week at the NASCAR races, and be here as first priority in case of a hurricane. Thanks for the welcome. fighterpilot
