Mercury Question?
« on: November 04, 2014, 09:13:06 PM »
Hey guys, I have a Merc on my 175 that I believe is a 1986 135/150 hp. P/O said it was a Black Max. Serial is 0A957126. No other markings on it. I do need to get a service manual for it, but in the mean time;

How can I tell if it is a Max motor?
What difference is a Max?
I was looking at other post here about weak charging, what amp stater would I have?
Also the fuel/vacuum lines that go to each cylinder? I guess they are for high rpm? And why are all but the starboard lower cylinder have a line going to it?I cannot find a fitting on this one.

I do have a hard cold start issue, have carb kits and a fuel pump kit on order. Along with stats and poppet valve. Thanks for any info. This is my first Mercury ever, I have worked on smaller two and four strokes. I also want to get the right factory manual.

Thanks and sorry if this has been brought up previously.

Thanks, I have no problem with parts. Though my serial # does show 135/150. I know they are the same basic motors, I am wondering about if and what is a black max. :scratch:

the black max motors are nothing special.  just what they named them.  that powerhead is pretty much the same until production ended for the standard carbed motor.  small ignition changes were made through the years but pretty much all the same.

the link supplied is my favorite place to research and buy parts.  great microfiche's there.

for the charging system, i think its a 16 amp.  quick google research will tell you.

no idea on the oil issue but if i was you i would convert to premix and not risk oil pump failure.  with a motor that old, if the alarm doesnt work, you wont know if failed till the motor locks up.

for the cold start issue, i had a problem on my 89 2.0 150.  it was the the fuel enricher.  thats what we have instead of choke.  with you push the key down in the ignition, it activates a solenoid that squirts fuel into the carbs instead of choking the motor.  locate it here.  http://www.boats.net/parts/search/Merc/ ... parts.html

to test it, turn the ignition on but do not start the motor.  push the little black button on the top of it.  you should feel/hear the solenoid activate.  if that works then move onto carbs.  although carbs and fuel pump are a good maintenance item to do on a new to you motor.  stats and poppet valve are good to do also just for peace of mine.  make sure you do the water pump too including the base.

once you get her running right, youll love the motor.  simple to work on, parts are everywhere used for the big stuff.

Black Max was nothing more than marketing. Nothing more than a name. The long haired, bearded tough guy emblem I guess was supposed to represent toughness, nautical, bad ass, etc. Mercury still has line of aluminum propellers badged as Black Max. Even after they officially dropped the name in the 90's, the little bearded guy was still a little sticker on the bottom front of the cowling.

Awesome, thanks again for the info. The motor is premixed. And it did push my 175 osprey ez 40 mph at maybe 3/4 throttle with no trimming. Slowed down as I was in a 25 zone. I kind of figured it was a marketing campaign. Thanks again!
