SCUPPERS
« on: August 25, 2014, 11:52:41 AM »
I back again. My 1987 200 is bottom painted & in the local marina. (Salt water) It has an older carb 150 Yama. that must be heavier than what the scuppers were built for. They sit about 1/2 way in the water so the boat slowly fills with water & the bilge pump kicks on about once every 24 40 hours or so. Even little fish , crabs & a couple of barnacles get into that well at the transom. Plus water gets in that chase with all the cables. There does not seem to be a way to fix this without moving the scupper holes up an inch or two. The ping pong balls would probably help some but would not eliminate the problem. There is a lot of algae & some trash in the marina That would foul the balls.  Any suggestions on a solution to this?? All suggestions would really be appreciated. I don't want to rebuild the boat.
Thanks,
uglystick

As they get older they gain weight sitting in the water. Go with the ping pong scuppers for now. They work, and move up and down as needed. Don't feel you'll have a problem with them clogging, even with algae. If you could beat back 80% of the water that enters you're way ahead. Your batts and the bilge pump will thank you.

Keep an eye on the ol' gal....Couple inches of hard rain quick has sunk a plenty.

The "ping pong ball" style scuppers made my TH marine are the best way to go.  They are a two piece design that allow you to take them apart for easy cleaning. Also the have a silicone seal that seems to seal to the balls really good.

Putting some type of ballast in the bow of the boat will help too.  Store a heavy anchor in the rope locker.  Maybe put some jugs of water or bags of sand in the storage lockers under the casting deck.  Move the batteries into the console if they are not already there.  Anything that can move the CG of the boat forward will help.

The scupper holes need to be below the level of the deck for them to function, so you can rule out this option unless they are currently several inches or more below the deck.  The ping pong balls are your best bet, as long as your scupper holes are mostly above water.  Moving weight forward as suggested will help.

A bit off-topic as this is not a rebuild....but does pertain to self-bailing:

Brad Knight of Onslow Bay told me today that all of their boats are set up with a deck deflection of 2 degrees stern to bow. Would imagine this would equate to 1/8ths of an inch fall bow to stern for every ten feet of deck.
