starting/idleing issues

Good morning everyone,,,
I had my maiden voyage on my new to me 1988 aquasport 222 ospreyw/ a 1988 200hp Johnson..
Had a tough time starting it do to what I'm told is a bad neutral safety switch ..  the motor turns over on first try but trying to get throttle in the proper position is tough.... Also when it is in neutral at times on low idle it will stall out... Which in return becomes an issue when your trying to get the throttle correct to restart ..
Where can I purchase a replacement original throttle control w/ key,trim,deadman switch that was original to boat ? Or is it better to replace the switch ?

The neutral start switch has nothing to do with running quality. It simply prevents the engine from turning over by blocking the starter circut. sounds like you have binding control cables and or a sticky box based on you description. Disassemble, clean and grease the box. Disconnect the shift and throttle cables from the engine and see if they still bind when moving the control handle.

Sorry you had some trouble, but glad you got to take a ride!  

Can you clarify what throttle you currently have so we can guide you better?  Parts are avaialble for most common throttles, but what you're describing might be enough to warrant finding a complete replacement.  Who told you the neutral switch was bad, and what did you tell them/what did they see to come to that conclusion?  I ask b/c what you describe doesn't exactly sound like a neutral switch, but could be a few other relatively easy problems.

If your assessment is correct, the switches themselves are often fairly easy to replace.  I personally run a Yamaha 704 single binnacle throttle and the neutral safety switch is the little black box attached by two stainless screws in the photo a couple posts down in the linked thread.  Pretty easy to remove and replace if it's the culprit.

thanks for the responses I do have a picture of the throttle then I'm talking about but I'm on my cell phone at the moment and don't know how to attach a picture to my gallery to add to this post I will have to do it when I get home on my laptop
I was able to bring the boat by my local marina with a guy was kind enough to take a quick look at it and started the motor within seconds by playing around with the throttle he was the one who told me that the neutral safety switch was not making and I may have an issue and have to play with the throttle to get it to start... I'm sure the motor issue stalling on low idle any either gear or neutral maybe a different issue or is it???

Yes.  Stalling would be a different issue.  The neutral switch only connects to the ignition switch and is not really part of the live circuitry once the engine is running.  You can try adjusting your idle screw a tad for now just to keep her from stalling, but before you do that find out what your RPM's are at idle.  Should be in the 1000 range (plus or minus a hundred or so) at idle.  If much higher, then you likely have some sort of fuel delivery, mixture, or timing issue causing the stalling.

and one more question while im at it... where can I get rpm gauge replacement ??

How old is that control? It looks fairly new, but the pic is really tiny. It looks like a BRP one. My 94 175 fires off without moving the controls. Link and sinc would tell you if the adjustments on the carbs is even.

Do you "warm it up" at the house on the muffs before you go to the ramp?

I have a couple of farias that came with the motors. They are used but if you pay shipping you can have one. They are the ones with the red cases.

not sure how old the control is   ive  only had the boat for a couple of months    but I would think that it is original,,,,  I know the key switch was replaced last year I think ...
do you have anything else for a 222   ????
