2 Cycle Oil in Splashwell
«

All,
I have noticed on a couple occasions that after my boat sits for a few days that I have some 2 cycle oil in my splashwell. Its maybe a few drops, not allot, that seems to be dripping from the tiller plate onto my hoses and then down. Its really more annoying than anything, trying to keep it clean. However, I want to make sure that is not a sign of something more serious.
I did take off the plenum and tried to wipe up any excess that was around the carbs, at the bottom of the plenum and the bottom of the cowling, and there was some. But after cleaning and use this weekend it has since re-appeared down in the splashwell. Is this normal for OMC/Johnson's to leak a little bit of oil when the motor is tilted back on the travel bracket. Its not fuel.. just green 2 cycle oil. Any advice would be greatly appreciated as it's something new that has just started.

Bruce, do you see any evidence of oil telltale on the lower pan? If so, check the "attachment" of the short pigtail oil line that runs to the VRO pump on the PH. If there is no evidence that it is coming from the motor, than it could be the barbed splice where the line off the oil tank and the line off the motor come together...in your rigging hose, about 6"-8" inside the hose from the entrance into the lower pan. Look for splits in your rigging hose. That oil hose has a pretty good wall thickness, but it could also be chafed through a bit somewhere after all this time...

It could be coming from the carbs themselves. The fuel evaporates leaving only the oil behind.

There would be a telltale Bruce behind the air box, into the lower pan, then somehow creep upward on the fwd "wall" of the pan, down the front side...and finally into the splashwell...

Its definitely coming from the lower pan and dripping down through the tiller plate. As mentioned above I think its coming from the carbs and running down and out the bottom of the plenum. Is there any way that I can stop this from happening. My mechanic said it's likely blow-back (whatever that is) and its fairly common. Didn't know if I changed something like driving habits or oil type that it might curtail this. Very weird.. as it just started.
Wing - Does your Looper do this and or thoughts?

FWIW, my 96 200 looper did it. Probably more so after a period of use and then down time. I just clean it up but I can't recall any ill effects. That motor is still running well but I believe the new owner removed the VRO system.

Thanks CB-
Motor is running well so I will just monitor... nothing one paper towel cant clean up. Maybe I will pull the plenum again and clean it well with soap and water. On thing I need to check is to make sure the nipple at the bottom is not plugged preventing the vacuum line from doing its job.

my 1990 200 did that if i left it trimmed up too... never had any issues, i just kept it trimmed down where she's just resting on the short trim rams... and oil seemed not to drip out as much...

Agreed.
Seemed to do it most when it was on the trailering bracket. I started to just lower the motor and not raise the hull as much with the jack when parked.

My 175 was doing this as well. What I found was the gasket behind the carbs was squished and was letting mixed fuel drain down. I rebuilt the carbs and I also removed the "ball bearing" in the side of the carb body and filled that hole and now no more leaking. The ball bearing was originally epoxied into the drill holes but over time this material failed.
This is the video I used to help me fix the issue.
