Interlux bilge kote in tank compartment ?
« on: April 17, 2014, 08:14:37 AM »
Almost to the steps of bilge painting my boat was wanting to paint the inside of the tank compartment before foaming the new tank in.  Will I have an issue with the two part polyurethane foam bonding to the bilge kote

Are you using epoxy?

If you are I would spray some interprotect 2000 on first then bilge cote.

If you are using polyester in your rebuild gelcoat would actually be a better choice to coat the coffin.

I would not paint the inside of the tank well if you are going to foam the tank in.  Just my $0.02...

I would have to agree with Scott's (gran398) suggestion about the tank install.  It would be a shame to have to dig back into the deck for a premature tank failure.

That is deffinatly a great article.  It ight just be my ADHD tendencies but I don't see anything that says not to paint or foam tank in.  The platform for the tank will be off the bottom of the boat and we'll away from bilge water.  Sorry if I missed it those days in school when I hid the florida sportsman magazines inside  my book so the teacher wouldn't know what I was really looking at dosnt help me later on.

You can put anything you want in the tank coffin except moisture.

Anything with water is bad on the aluminum so........

Mount it and somehow keep water out and it will last longer.

Good luck.

The aluminum tank will sweat moisture. The only purpose of foam in this application is to prevent movement....a giant chock.

To follow the idea of air circulation....forego the foam, and chock it down fore and aft, up and down.

We went with gallon ziplock bags in each corner, spray foam in the bags. Hollow FRP girders on top
