Yamaha ignition switch help
« on: April 01, 2014, 07:43:56 PM »
I need a new main ignition switch (three position push to choke) for my Yamaha 1998 2 stroke 75 hp- Great Lakes Skipper has a 4 Winns panel with a Yamaha outboard ignition switch with key and push to choke and harness for $113.00- question- is this a drop in replacement that will work on my engine? My engine has a side shift control with harness and key, but the push to choke feature doesn't work- are these year model specific switches are will they work with a number of Yamaha outboard engines?

Yes Ron, it will work.  Yamaha ign switches stayed virtually unchanged for years and years.  Early ign switches had the choke in a separate push button switch, but since, like mid 90s, the push to choke has been in the key switch itself...

You want the digital display Yam tach, Ron?  A bit pricey...

Wow! seems a bit much...but it is a multi-function display and dsplays things that my motor doesn't have like oil level- mine is stricly a pre-mix 50-1...maybe the standard factory tach still works- all i really need is the RPM function to work so I can tell if I have the right prop to allow the engine to rev up to the correct RPM at wot...my motor came off a fresh water bass boat that the owner wanted to go much faster than the 75 hp Yamaha factory motor that came with the boat...15 pitch three bladed stainless prop- I wonder what that setup is going to do on my 170? Hopefully it will rev to the correct rpm...

Ron, tach sender on Yams is the green wire, so hook up green to S, yellow to I, and black to ground, you should be good to go...
