Thermostats............
« on: March 31, 2014, 01:54:04 PM »

I bought new thermostats Thursday. as you can see there is a bit of a difference.
my old one screws in flush to the thermostat gasket. when I screw the new one in all the way to
the gasket it does not touch the water outlet inside the engine. do I need to adjust it until it fits right myself?
I did some research, and it seems like my old one is obsolete.

I'm guessing the new is the correct thermostat, just updated, and I need to do the proper adjusting.
notice the thread difference between the old and new one.

thanks for all help

Plastic thermostats? New to me. We do about $400k a year with Stant but most marine thermostats are Robertshaw as an OEM. I could see plastic as a pressure relief valve but could not imagine a nylon filled glass composite being able to withstand that kind of loading without blowing the top off of the thermostat with a minimum of 50,000 cycles needed for the standard stat made from 409 stainless steel or 85/15 brass, amazing. We need an OMC guy to walk us through the upgrade. Which engine do you have 60 degree lopper or 90 degree cross flow? Futch, you seen this?

Just replaced mine on my 92 Johnson 150, they were plastic as well. The ones I took out(age unknown) were also plastic, new ones looked just like the old ones, came with new springs and O rings and new plastic screw in covers...The old covers crunched apart while removing them, had to pick the plastic out of the threads on the head..Took 2 hours total  The place here where I get my parts only had the plastic ones..Does seem strange that they would use plastic for thermostats, but I am new to outboards and go with what the Johnson place close to me recommends.... most of the time

Those are called vernatherms. same as tstats with poppet included.  OMC had a problem with the original seats for those with fins that sat into the grommet.  You need to replace grommet, vernatherms, diaphram and if I remember correctly the covers also.  They had a kit for this at one time.  I will try to look it up today and see if I can find the info.  Been years since I have seen one of the original ones.  The update took place in 92 or so.

The issue was that corrosion would build up behind the grommet and lock the vernatherm down causing an overheat at WOT.  With the SLOW system they had at the time the RPMs would drop from WOT to approx 2200 rpms immediately.  Depending on the boat, the captain would go thru the windscreen and the passengers would go swimming LOL.

Now that I think of it my buddy has a 89 140 looper and he had to get a kit to replace all of that stuff.  It had a weird diaphragm in the cover too.  I also remember it building up a bunch of corrosion and sediment...

As for plastic here is a classic bit by Carlin (some language) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NBRquiS1pis

Ford got sued, and settled, over those manifolds (coolant passages cracked).  Hardly a resounding success
