Johnson ignition......
« on: April 06, 2014, 01:30:14 PM »
Replaced vernatherms and grommets on sat. (I'll post pics
Tomorrow)
Any way, started the boat to check if things were
Working good, everything seemed to work fine.
Went to shut the engine off, turned the ignition to the
Off position, engine kept running. I have a spare ignition
Put that one in this morning, ran the engine again this
Morning does the exact same thing. I turned the key to
The off position and engine kept running.
I'm going to try to check the wire I believe it's the black
Wire with yellow trace and see what I find.
Just wondering if any body out there has any better ideas.
HELP!!!!!
I have to disconnect the fuel line to :*: her down.

Try this.  Attach a wire to a known good ground, then, with the key in the off position, touch the bare end of that wire to the ignition lead on any one of the coils.  She should shut down...

Seabob,
Does that mean I could connect it to the battery's
Ground?
I'm not electrical at all!!

Yep.  I'm betting you have a ground wire broken in the engine harness.  If it was at the key switch, the second switch would have solved the problem.

Now that I think about it, there is an easier way.  pull the kill switch lanyard.  If that doesn't work, then take the same ground you attached to the batt negative and touch it to the purple wire on the back of the key switch...

purple wire is key + , make sure ignition switch is off b4 you touch that with grd.  Go back to motor and find the blk/yellow wire and grd it with motor running, if that shuts motor down then you have a wiring issue, if it keeps running, power pack is bad.  Prolly the pack.  Sorry I didn't get back to you on the vernatherm issue, was slammed at work, 12-14 hr days and didn't feel like looking at computer when I got home.

no worries futch13. at first I thought it was because the engine was running so good it
didn't want to shut off!!!!!!
will try everything possible when I trouble shoot this.
been a little under the weather the last couple days........probably
start trouble shooting when I'm feelin a little better.

thanks guys,

HC,
i'll let ya'll know what the outcome was.

Godd morning guys.
well the problem is solved. just when I was going to fire her up and run a couple of grounding
tests, I spotted the broken wire on the engine harness side of the cannon plug.
the wire was not in very good shape. I ran a new wire from the plug to the power pack,
started her up let her run for a couple minutes and she shuts down with the key.
took me a matter of about 20 minutes of running the wire properly taking my time.

installed a new temp. guage. did not work. traced the wires from the engine
and found a splice under the console that  contains the brown wires from the engine
and looks very suspect. I will be fixing that this afternoon, other than that,
that old 1985 Johnson 140 looper is running awesomely.

thanks for all the input guys, it is greatly appreciated.       :salut:

Typical temp gages designed for inboards and stern drives usually show little or no movement on an outboard because of how cool outboards run. So dont be surprised if your needle doesn't move past "C" on your gage. Double check your wiring for sure but there may not be anything wrong with it.

fitz.......this temp gauge is on my aquasport 196, 1985 Johnson 140 looper.
shouldn't it work within normal temp. ranges?
i should see some movement of the needle on this guage. right?

futch13 thanks for input also!!!!!!!

HC-

What Farley's saying is that generic marine temp gauges support a wide temperature range to accommodate inboards, diesels, etc. and that outboards run at the very bottom of the overall temperature range, so unless your gauge is manufactured specifically for outboards, then it will barely move even the engine is running and hot.
