Best Bonding Filler @ fwd decking @ hinge support strip 196
« on: February 14, 2014, 04:58:28 PM »
Looking to fill/resupport the 2" wide forward decking supports on my 196 at the hatch hinge decking cap which runs from the step up towards the bow....one on either side of the main hatch...both cracked. This deck cap section that the forward hatch hinges screw into were cracked/bent downward  by the previous owner who had a grossly overweight cooler strapped up there...actually popped the underlying 1/2 ply below out from its poly encapsulation.  I have cut out the large foamed center well for access and have built a permanent wood bracing structure to support the cracked area from underneath...it rests atop the stringers  I will be jacking a 1.5 x 2 inch x 3 foot wooden support up into the molded deck cap.  I have removed the factory 1/2 thick x 1.5 inch wide glassed in plywood that previously supported the interior of the deck cap.  This narrow, now hollow deck cap has multiple cracks, etc  and needs to be restabilized internally.... the fitting of my new wooden support/backing will inevitably leave voids between it and the factory deck cap once I jack it up. I basically have one shot at doing this.... I would like to smear the wood backing with a thick pasty epoxy or poly mixture before jacking it in that will fill the voids and also BOND to the wood and the deck cap. Could perhaps wrap the wood in glass cloth prior to whatever mix I use.  Was considering a product call "kitty hair" by evercoat until I called evercoat and they said it is not compatible with wood and has weak bonding characteristics....This repair has been a real challenge.....  Looking for any info on a good filler that will accomplish my objectives of filling and bonding to both materials.  Also, any wood recommendations to use....ply may be tough to hand sculpt to the fit-in....maple? oak? pressure treated?  Thanks for your wisdom here!

I'm trying real hard but I just can't figure out what you're talking about.  Please post some pix and we'll be all over it then.

Same here Rick.  In this case, a picture (or 2) REALLY will be worth a 1000 words...

sorry for the description with no pics but am away from the boat for a couple weeks.  should have simply asked for advice on a high strength and high bonding filler.....think i have found what will work with the West 610 epoxy...comes in a caulking tube, has a thick consistency for filling and high bonding capabilities to both fiberglass and wood i was told...a bit pricey at $21.00 per tube but cheaper than a boatyard bill!...has anyone used it?...thnx!
