Ben,
I think you already know the answer. I would be looking for newer used still under warranty, freshwater engine from a dealer that actually sells the same brand you are considering. You should consider another Yamaha to save the rigging costs of another harness, instruments,de-rig,re-rig and controls. There's a $1000 of cost savings right there. Your engine has trade in value dispite the current issues so maybe another $2500-$2700 there. Some of the OEMs are offering financing so you don't have to right a check for $10,000 if you don't want to on certified used engines. You have all winter to find one and I'll bet you can find a dealer who will make a deal when business is typically slow this time of year.

If you are looking for a used engine, you can try Brian Franzen @ Franzen Marine in Tampa 813-835-9655.  He has a lot of used motors that he goes thru and certifies and puts a warrant on.  Only problem there is the warranty is his not a manufacturers warranty.  I have purchased several motors from him and also power heads and have never had an issue.

Also, I should have a 200 HPDI coming in on trade first of the year, its blown bad (rod thru block @ 6500 rpm) so I will have wiring harnesses available at that time if you want to try them.

Can't beat that Ben! Atleast you know it was running good when it blew! This could be your chance.

I did that with a 428 Ford back in my college days, about 85 MPH in the middle of BFE Illinois headed back to Champaign.  Unbelievable how quiet things got in that car, REAL quick...

I have heard nothing but good about Franzen... :thumleft:  :thumleft:

There are positive reviews all over the net. Here's an example:

Franzen Marine in Tampa
I bought a rebuilt powerhead for my 175 Yami from Brian Franzen back in January. He gave me a great deal, so good that I hauled my boat across the state to have him work on it. The engine ran flawlessly until two weeks ago when it seized up on me offshore. I dropped it off at Brian's shop Monday evening and got a message from him early Thursday morning letting me know my boat was ready to be picked up. Brian replaced the powerhead with a newly rebuilt one - no charge, no excuses, no problems. I can't say I've always had such positive experiences with outboard repair.

I had a few folks on spearboard recommend Brian back in January and he definitely came through. Brian is a stand-up guy that lived up to his word of a 12 month warranty on a rebuilt. Thought it was worth a mention here since there are so many spearboard members in the Tampa Bay area.

LOL Same here with a 283 in a 57 Chevy racing a Mustang on I-70 out of St Louis.  Still have what's left of a piston and a rod twisted 180' on my desk!!!

Fitz73222,
You make a good point about getting another yamaha & saving money on a rigging change. I'd like to find a freshwater engine off of a hurricane deck boat or something, since really nothing else around here requires a 25" shaft. However, I am not completely opposed to a newer saltwater engine.

Futch13,
That sounds like a deal to me with the hpdi wiring harness. Please let me know when that engine comes in, because I may be interested in multiple parts off of it to try. I guess we could either ship the parts, but my parents are also driving down to Bonita Springs on January 18th. Do an in person pickup could be an option too.

Franzen sounds like the man to see if I can't get this figured out & he stands by his warranty. I will save his contact info.

I'm going to pick up the boat later on today, and I'm going to run it on a remote tank, clean the VST screen, check the function of the VST float to make sure it's not hanging up, check to make sure my new shift position switch isn't hanging up, and give a thorough look at the wiring harness.

I've heard about the wiring harness wires becoming damaged as it makes a turn underneath the engine block. Many people have a problem with wires that are wrapped in electrical tape or wire loom from the factory, so they are difficult to find.

I'll let y'all know!

Sounds like y'all were hard on your cars in your younger years.  At least one of y'all got a pretty cool paperweight for your desk out of the deal!

Ben,

This bunch is like a dog with a bone when it comes to problem solving.

By the time this is finished you will probably be the most knowledgeable HPDI layman in your area.

Your plan sounds like a good one.

Merry Christmas to you and your folks! :santa:

Ben, I traded the car ('72 Mercury Grand Marquis) for the towing bill, since I was like 120 miles from Champaign.  I only paid $500 for it, and I knew it had an oil leak...

I'm definitely getting an education with this engine! But seriously, thanks for everyone's suggestions, help, encouragement, pointers, and life advice! That's why this place is so special!

Futch,
Do you think I could get the fuel injector driver off of that blown hpdi if it's still salvageable? When I picked the boat up yesterday, the dealer said that I should probably check into that as well.

Seabob,
That was probably the best payment you could have made. You came ahead in that deal. More headaches were probably ahead!

Merry Christmas to everyone as well!

Should be no problem.  I'll let you know when I get it to the shop.

Thank you very much! I guess just let me know when the motor comes in & we can work out the details! I've looked on eBay, but the older hpdi fuel injector drivers with the correct part number don't seem to be available. So you are really helping me out here!

Thanks!
