get 'er straight
« on: January 11, 2014, 07:12:32 PM »
Anyone have a trick for moving the boat around on the trailer? I'm going to adjust the guides on my trailer, but she's on crooked. I would like to move the stern over 2-3".

Determine which side of the a$$ end needs to move to center.  Let's assume starboard.  Pull the rig up next to a stout tree or post, starboard side next to the post/tree.  Jack the a$$ end of the boat up with a floor jack (2X on the jack pad to protect the keel).  Secure a come-along or a ratchet strap around the trailer frame aft.  Winch on either to pull the trailer to starboard until the keel lines up with the centerline of the trailer.  Set boat down.  Done...

I am thinking about lowering the trailer  jack some, blocking up the center up transom with a 4x4 on end. I am thinking if I raise the jack some, I might be able to relieve weight on bunks enough to twist trailer until keel is centered.

A number of ways to getting her on straight, Greg.  The main thing is you need to hold one or the other "heavy" objects still, while moving the OTHER heavy object...pick your poison... :thumright:

I'm not moving the bunks. Just want her centered on trailer so I can properly adjust the guide posts so that she loads straight.

Hey Greg,
One additional thought once you get the boat centered on the trailer is that the widest area for the beam dimension may not be at the transom. On my old 22-2, the beam is widest between the front of the console and the bow deck, basically where the bow flare is tangent to the straight portion of the hull side. So take a couple of beam measurements so you get your guide ons set to the correct width. I had set mine to the transom area initially only to have them stop the boat from unloading off of the trailer because they were way too tight in the area I described. Just some experience learned the hard way!
