I have a fiberglass issue
« on: August 22, 2013, 10:05:31 PM »
O.K. guys, a few years ago my father in law took my 19.6 on a joy ride. It got a little rough and he decided to POWER through it. His POWERing through it ripped the bimini, and put 2 nice cracks, one on the outer side of each stringer. For the past couple years I have glassed the bottom and DONE WHAT I COULD...... Well now they have returned and I have 2 choices.
1) dump the boat and find a new one........... Cost 3-4 thousand
2) cut out the deck glass the inside, add some support. Glass the out side and see what happens...
    Cost...??????????? and how long

Can you guys help me out?
Cant figure out how to post a pic sorry

Let's try a photo first.
viewtopic.php?f=3&t=10343

Read through the post first, then......
when you go to the photo gallery remember, you currently don't have a member gallery called Pepper. Don't try and find it.

Instead,  click on "upload photos" and then follow the steps in the post. The gallery will create your personal member gallery for you. The next time you go to the gallery, you can then find your pics. Really though, any time you want to download a new photo the gallery will recognize you automatically once you start the process.

Good luck.

Sounds like the stringers have delaminated from the hull as you have probably concluded. The boat has to come apart to fix it properly which means a rebuild. Plenty of guys here that can share that expense with you if you plan to do it yourself. I would say $5K to $10K depending on the level of detail you want to go to.

Pepper, are the cracks growing in length?
for example: did they start out about 6-7" long and keep getting longer?

if so I had the same problems with a 1963 seabreeze boat bought when I was about 14.
with my lawn cutting money. I noticed water on board, went to get dad we took the boat out of the water.
noticed a couple cracks on the bottom. I fiberglassed them. after about a month there was more water on board.
took the boat back out of the water, the cracks grew longer, I  drilled some holes at the very end of the cracks. re-fiberglassed everthing with heavy and long overlap.
ended up working out fine.
hopefully that's all the problem you have. just putting in my 2 cents.
well goodluck I hope it's an easy solution for you.

No, the cracks have stayed the same length.
