Questions about 1980 family fisherman
« on: July 14, 2006, 11:10:00 AM »
I have a 1980 aquasport 22"2 family fisherman. It has the 470 mecruiser motor(4cyl.) I added a 9.9 yamaha kicker motor and had a halftower built for it. My questions are, is this boat safe to go out about 30 miles offshore? And my other question is; i would like to drop a v-8 motor into boat. Would this be to much weight with the kicker and halftower?

Yank the 470 out, close the transom and slap a couple of 115's out the back

J/K  :D  Really though - questions you should ask yourself.  How reliable is the motor?  Do you know it's history? What's the integrity of the hull - any leaks?  Also with an inboard make sure your tank/fuel system is in good shape.  Don't want to go boom.  Other than that I don't see any problems going offshore.  Ask another boat to go out with you if your not experienced or comfortable going that far out on your own.  222 sounds like a good ride for offshore.  You'd be amazed what people go offshore in - I once saw a couple of guys in a jonboat about 20 miles offshore.  They had the deck stacked with fuel tanks

Thanks OSPREY 170,

I was thinking about twin's on the back, until i priced them.
(unreal) Your advice was all i needed to hear. Oh, and i hear the same stories about offshore. My relative is one of them. He used to go out to the canyon in a 18ft. mako cc. for shark and tuna tornaments. No thanks. Anyway thanks for info.
