Trim and Tilt motor and manual release replacement
« on: August 20, 2013, 09:35:14 PM »
Okay, forum I am going to detail the repair of my tilt and trim.

Here is why it broken there is a hole in the motor:

Also, the manual release is frozen and has broken before actually getting it out 3 turns so I will need to drill that out to release the pressure.

... Only benefit is that the motor is on the trailering rest and not fully down.

Update on the prep work ... I was outside soaking the whole thing in PB Blaster and decided to see if any of the pins show signs of easy movement and yeah!! They move easy.

I am also thinking because the motor is 190, the manual release is 90, that's 280. If the valve body is shot then that's 400 and I will be in for 680.

I have seen used ones for 499 and 599 on Ebay so I might just buy and swap.

Motor is out. This was not as bad as I thought. Nothing a flat chissel and a 5Llb hammer could do. I have pictures and I will do the right later.

I hand harder ball joints then this pig, I didn't even need to get my torch

Since my release is not working, I had to remove the lower pin to allow the motor to move.

***Soak, Soak and Soak some more with PB Blaster or Liquid Wrench.

The Top pin was a little stubborn but a little persuasion with a 5Lb hammer and a flat chisel and it started moving.

** As a technique I would hit the right side a few times, then do the same on the left side ... then soak with Liquid Wrench.

Finally it is out.

Once the pins were lose, I used my engine hoist to raise the motor up so I can catch the safety.

Here is the safety engaged.

Then remove the ground and cut the wires. I used a 3/8 box wrench to loosen the screw then used a ratchet to zip it out.

Then put the whole assembly in a vice and remove the other 3 bolts.

Here is a view of the motor it is toast:

Richard the owner of Lindenhurst Outboard Service in NY is going to change the motor for me and the manual release. He had the motor in stock but not the release so he offered to do the job and reseal the whole unit so I lucked out.

Good deal Melo! You did the hardest part that doesn't require special tools.. Hopefully the shop turnaround will be quick!

Good Job! That's why I spray mine down with corrosion X now and then.  Of course it helps if you get it from the PO in good shape to begin with.   Interestingly my 90HP has a metal motor housing,  My 225 has a all plastic motor housing.  Why they would use steel on a "Ocean" motor is beyond me.

=== Re-assembly time ===

1) Get yourself two additions to your tool box wire brush and an bit extender

2) Remove all of the bushings

3) Clean the holes with the new tool
Before:

After:

4) Use the extender to rifle drill the bottom shaft holes

Before:

After:

5) Lube up he bushings with triple guard grease

6) Then put it back in the clam shell

Put the clips back in and use an external batter to run the shaft up to the top. If you over run it you can use the manual release to allow play just remember to retighten the manual after you inserted the pins.

Now phase 2, to remove the lower cover and run the wires.
