Embarrassing engine tuning realization
« on: August 08, 2013, 11:50:11 AM »
Based on a recent realization I guess I deserve to get my chops busted a bit, so I'll bravely make an admission.

Just randomly came across some spark plug gapping specs while researching some other engine stuff...  Proper gap for most older OMC's is 0.030.  Apparently in the deep dark recesses of my subconscious I decided years ago that 0.043 was the correct gap setting and I've been running 0.043 for as long as I can remember without verifying specs b/c I "had it memorized"...  Turns out the 0.043 is the setting for my truck, not my boat.

Talk about feeling foolish!!  :jocolor:

Excited to see the potential improvement in combustion/efficiency though.    Will post back on this thread if the difference is note-worthy.

Oh my God, thats terrible! It takes a hell of guy to admit his gap is too wide. We're here to support you during this time of grief. The only thing worse than this is if you admitted to mixing too much oil in a 50-1 engine and having her smoke excessively. That hasn't happened has it?

Nope....but there's still time.

I'm rather loathe to admit it, but I'm also a charter member of the Rod Holder Fuel Fill Club.

No joke, I was at the marina this past weekend getting bait and there was a guy who had what looked to be like a 15 y/o kid filling the boat up.  The dad goes in the shop in front of me, after a minute or two the kid comes in and the dad says is it full.  And the kid says no.  The dads says how much is it at, and the kid goes out and comes back in and says 41 gallons.

The dad says, "impossible, the boat only holds 25 gallons and it had a quarter of a tank in it, don't you know how to read a fuel pump." and goes out the door.  I hear all hell breaking loose, I am finished paying for my shrimp, coke and bag of chips and I go out the back door, and the guy is going crazy because he has 30 gallons of fuel in the bilge.

I sort of felt sorry for the kid, but I didn't see how put the pump in the boat.

I would have filtered that bilge gas! But thats coming from someone who left the drain plug out last outing and let a thousand lbs of water into the bilge! Go figure. Way worse than .043 spare plug gap
