Running new steering cable - 175

No, your cable and your helm are NOT one entire piece.  There is a retaining pin where the cable enters the helm.  Pull that pin and then turn the wheel, the gearing inside the helm will back the cable right on out.  Then pull the old cable out from the aft end.  As I said earlier, the rod at the engine end can't negotiate bends in your rigging tube or trough (if you have one of those), not to mention the large retaining nut.

KC, that may work.  Most people are averse to cutting more holes in their boats, but that's up to you.  The rod needs a pretty straight shot to get through the tilt tube, so eyeball the new hole location and see if that's gonna be the case...

Are you sure it is one piece?  At the helm, look for a cotter pin where the cable enters the helm.  Remove that pin and use it to push in a dimple underneath the helm near the cable.  This should release the cable.
I am pretty sure all the replacement teleflex systems are quick-connect ("QC") cables so it any case you shouldn't have to worry about installing the new one.

You guys are right, I was told by two different places that it was a sealed one piece assembly, but now that I have to new one in and saw how it goes together I see how the old one comes apart. I went with the TEL SS13215, the no feedback 15' and that fit great, might be a little longer than what came out(I forgot to lay them out next to each other before putting the new one in) The good news is it went in and I had the boat out on the water for a perfect day with better steering then this boat has had for the 3 years I have had it....

Got my steering replaced this weekend too - the extra 6 inches of cable is a slight pain but not a huge deal.   I am also psyched about the NFB system.

I replaced the steering cable last year on my 175 and did a pretty thorough write up on removing wheel, helm, cable, and motor from the transom. Also drilled out the rivets and opened up my bad helm for all to see.  

For me, lifting the engine was much less work than drilling a new hole for the cable.  It came in handy when I needed to lift the engine a second time to replace a trim and tilt motor.

Went out for a long run yesterday fishing in the hot sun.
The NFB system is a great upgrade.  I was wondering about the 4.2 vs 3 turns but it's really hardly noticeable and more than offset by the benefits of NFB.   I would definitely recommend it to anyone replacing their steering.
