Small Issues resolved in a couple of days!
« on: June 14, 2013, 10:26:35 PM »
After fishing we had some idle issues the other day. Decided to drain and clean out my fuel tank.
Being a 1995 boat,  long overdue in my opinion.
We launched and headed to the fuel dock. Made it about 15 minutes and we had a high heat alarm.
Shut her down and headed back after some cooling time.
We removed the thermostats and found one non op.
Bought a new upgraded pair from Yamaha, she ran cool but a little pop here and there.
We launched and had no issues.
Made it to the fuel dock.
Had all the old E 10 sucked out. It ended up being 80 gallons due to a bad gauge sending unit.
This is Enrique, I have known him for 30 years (He has worked for Gary for that long).

Here is Todd doing the fuel polishing. The tank was a little dirty, not too bad though.
He spend some time and did the detail work, even chased the threads on the tank bolt holes.
He also got me new screws and some extras for when the new sender comes in.

Getting down to the bottom. He then used a scrub brush feed with new fuel and did a final scrub rinse out.
Looked really clean once he was done.

The final stages, all cleaned up and new fuel in her.
Only added in 20 gallons of fuel.  I will work off this and add to as needed. They did a new fuel filter and I was on my way back home.

So I get back to the ramp, there is a guy sitting on the ramp pumping up his inflatable??
A couple of guys were yelling at him to move somewhere.
I just take it all in, kinda funny really.
I guess it wasn't a busy day so what the hell?

At the completion of the work,  Todd suggested once I get home to drain the carb bowls. I guess the E 10 settles to the bottom.
We were on it once we arrived home.
We cracked the carbs and had a little thicker haze?  Kinda like corn syrup but thinner.
One carb was bone dry,  had no fuel in it??
Took the carb off the motor and removed the bowl. The floats needle valve was stuck Upon inspection, there was a burr in the area.
We shaved it down with a exacto knife. Worked it real  careful. It was smooth after that.
Once re installed, we could here the fuel fill into the carb.
We knew we had it right.
We put the outboard on muff's and fired her up.
She ran like a top.
Fast idle first, at 1300 rpm, then dropped down to 600 rpm after a minute or so, not a miss at all.

We also decided to replace the impeller as well. It had been almost 175 hours on the old one.
Bought the whole kit at a local Yamaha dealer, he gave me a great price point without asking. We did the replacement in about 1 hour.
Changed the lower oil while we were at it.
After reassemble,  We fired her up again, checked the forward and reverse and water pressure.
BTW, the exhaust chamber looks great, no corrosion at all, very nice looking.
She is running really good now, all ready for fishing this season.
We will go out on Sunday for a Fathers day cruise.
We are fishing on Tuesday and Thursday, lets see how she does.

It's nice to see that your fuel polishing guy protected your deck with towels.  Too many people just don't give a crap anymore.

Craig,
these guys at Hills are awesome. His dad owned the business since the mid 50's?.
They are very service oriented. A real class operation.
You head in for fuel or a service, they almost run to take care of you.
I have dealt with them for over 35 years, never a problem.
He will do whatever you need, at anytime.
Always detailed and always clean work.
They are next to the Balboa Angling Club.
If the club docks are full,
they will tie you off  to get weighed in there.
The fuel docks in Newport have come and gone.
Hills is still there.
Speaks volumes I think, yeah?

You got that right.
I learned a lot about E10.
It is real crap for boats.
Here, we don't get a choice.

Just had the same thing done at Suwannee Marina just north of Cedar Key.  Had them refill with marine gas only.  Lucky for me there is one gas station in Chiefland that sells marine gas.

From now on... that is the only thing that goes in the boat.

We have no choice. CA is E10 gas.
Summer gas is even worse.
There is a place way up North, like above Sacramento the is part of the PureGasOrg.
Just way too far away, 500 or 600 miles!
I think we could buy a drum of non E10 Aviation fuel here?

I run aviation fuel in my airboat (lycoming engine).  It is a bit more expensive than non-ethanol fuel, but I guess you get what you pay for.  Never thought about using it in my yamaha.

That's one thing that sucks around here. You can't buy real gas. Even the "real" gas is posted saying that it contains up to 15% ethanol. But i know a guy that has an equipment company, he has driven around and tested it from Austin to south of San Antonio and he says he hasn't tested any that was that low. Its always 22-28%. Because of that he will not warranty any small engines (his brand new stuff he sells, or his repair)s for anything if it has had ethanol in it. He gives people paperwork to that effect before he sells it to them.

Yeah, well, he cant do a warranty for something that ruin's the engine.
Not fair to him or the company selling the product.
The gas sucks.
I saw a bunch of parts that it damaged, not good at all.

I just drove past my non E watering hole and it was $4.49 gal. That is about 1 buck more then the E10 stuff around here. Probably worth the extra buck not to have all the E10 issues.

Bryan,

E10 issues aside, I'm giddy for you considering all the "peace of mind" work you've been able to take care of (and it looks/sounds like it's all getting done superbly too).  I HATE being on the water and worrying what's going to fail next or what ticking time bomb I have that I could've prevented.   I have been laboring (and paying) to eliminate many of those same types of issues on my little 18 wellcraft lately and it's paying dividends!  You'd've puked if you saw the condition of my racor filter when I replaced it the other day.  My little ol' Johnnyrude crossflow engine is so polite she doesn't even tell me when I'm feeding her crap!  The amount of rust from water absorbed by E10 fuel blew my mind.  I now have to overhaul my carbs b/c I'm almost 100% positive I have a particle or two lodged in my low speed jets that shook loose when I was replacing the filter.    Nice work!   :salut:  I'm Jealous!

and btw - LOVE the layout in your AS.  :thumright:   Good luck with those engines.  Do as Fitz says and have the ticking one properly rebuilt/overhauled immediately and then you can sleep soundly at night.  Peace of mind is worth more $$ than I ever imagined as a kid.

Yes, nothing is worst than being over in Catalina (an Island 26 miles out) and having an issue.
Sure, I have Vessel Assist, who wants to sit around with your wife and daughters waiting for a tow.
Yes, it is better to do all you can and feel you did the right things.
At this point in my life I have some bucks, you are correct, the spent money means nothing when you are stuck.
Better to spend a few bucks and make it as ship shape as possible, gives you a good feeling heading out or back knowing you have not short cut anything.
Thanks for the kind words on the Osprey set up. It has been a long haul to get her just right, she works well and really performs well.
The next step is to add a pair of outboards, mostly for the satisfaction of knowing one can get us home.
The other addition this winter will be a small tower, kinda like a Cobia tower.
I have kicked around the best set up I can figure, I believe after these upgrades, she will be solid and well set up.
My Dad, 82 years old, RET Navy CMDR say's "Hope for the best but prepare for the worst" each time we go out.
