Hey Bill,

The Merc idea may not be a bad idea but I'm biased. The word on the street is that the small Mercs are Tohatsu's. welcome to global sourcing!

Martin, A leakdown test will give a good idea of where your leak is......I had pulled the T-stat and could hear air escaping in the water jacket.......The  early 115's had oil pumps with single seals that failed and let water in the oil. ( or leaked oil externally ).  later ones have double seals.

68V W009A 0IIS head assembly; $2100.

68V W009B D315 Block assembly;$2871.

Does NOT include gasket set,labor,etc.....one year warranty from Yamaha.

Extras, but should  do since it's apart, clean VST tank and replace filter and gasket, oil pump, water pump, and LP fuel pump if leaking.

Hi Gents,

Since I have the trouble with the Yamahas
No fault found yet
Want you opinion on a new pair of Mercurys 115 4strokes
Or maybe 150 since they are only 50 Lbs heavier
I know you all like to spend other people money so let me hear your thought and comments
Thanks

Hi Martin,

Mercury "standard" 4 strokes are partnered with Yamaha or Tohatsu and are identical to one another just re-badged as a Merc. The Verado's and Optimax's are US built in Fond du Lac. Many of todays engine components are sourced around the world, just like automobiles. In a highly automated plant, it really doesn't matter where the engine is built anymore. The engineering, process controls, quality expectations and components are all developed here in the US and manufactured elsewhere for cost controls. The Human element of success or failure of a process is virtually non existent. The biggest problem with China produced components is when the US parent corporation takes their eye off of the ball and let the Chinese source components on their own, then quality takes a nose dive. Our corporation has manufacturing plants around the globe basically designed to support the geographic market and not ship low cost stuff back here. So US products stay here and China products stay there. In the case of Yamaha rotted mid sections;it is more than likely a design issue rather than a component issue, although the symptom shows up as a component failure. Look for a new engine that offers the best corrosion warranty and of course it is only as good as the dealer you have so shop with that in mind. The good news is the Chinese government is making it increasingly difficult for American manufacturers to do business there plus the once attractive low labor cost is evaporating rapidly so companies are closing operations everyday and moving back here and automating to remain competitive. The point I'm trying to make is don't get hung up on point of origin. Don't be surprised to see more outboards produced back here in the USA in the coming years.

Thanks Fitz,

My dilemma is that i bought the yam from a merc dealer
He show his goodwill to offer me 2 new engines at cost and take the yam back
What I'm try to find out are they any good or do I run into the same problems in a couple of years
They come with a 3 year warranty what is something
you know when you have spend a significant of $$ then??
If I had plenty $$ then it was another story
will see what the feedback is and think about it
Best

Hi Martin,
The challenge here is that we're dealing with a Yamaha design issue from 5-10 years ago that is now starting to show up as corrosion issues now. My guess is that they have delt with this issue and have improved the product. I'm a Mercury guy who would preach "go buy the Mercs" because I've been running them for 35 years with very little issues; not to say that Mercury hasn't done their fare share of stupid :*: either. My stuff is either in a garage or under a cover that gets soapy washed, flushed, waxed and kissed good night everynight as opposed to sitting in 85 degree saltwater, at a marina in Bimini. My advice would be to go see what the commercial guys and law enforcement are running and trend a purchase decision that way. The guys who make a living on the water are the ones that know. It sounds like you have a good dealer to work with which makes all of the difference.
