pure age of the prop, the hub is vulanized rubber to the prop, or hitting something can break the hub free, that is it's designed function, to save the motor and drive shaft.

Once the problem occured I changed the propeller and put a stainless steel prop I had in the back yard. And the problem got worse. It wouldn't even get on a plane. If the hub is slipping it will still cause the that problem even with a new prop?

If you get on plane and all of a sudden the prop breaks free and the engine revs up than it is the prop slipping.

Take it to a prop shop and they can tell if the hub is worn out before you spend any money.

do you think the damage on the pictures can have caused the hub to slip?

No that damage does not look like a prop slipping. Looks like it hit something or it may have some kind of gear damage or the hub is so loose that it hit the thin flange around the prop breaking it. But through you discription before the picture it did point toward a slipping prop. when you replaced the prop did the shaft have any plat in it?

I have never seen damage before but have had a slipping prop.

I have,

Thats from running the engine without a thrust washer. The propeller just backs down till it hits the bearing carrier gussets and buzz saws itself into destruction. Lucky for you, only the bearing carrier needs to be replaced and not the whole gearcase assembly. The gap that has been created by the damage will cause any prop to ventilate because the exhaust gases are trying to pass over the prop hub instead of through it.
