For what it's worth, my 96 (and 85) OMCs required the addition of a ground (sender) wire snaked back from the motor to the gauge. I had the type that rested on the head surface rather than one in the actual water flow. On my 200 Yamaha (91), each sensor does have wiring through the harness.

Who knows?

Interesting.  I have the factory OMC installation manual for my 98 225hp.  I'm sure they are the same set up.

I bought the 96 200 on a pallet. It came with the harness. I purchased the gauges separately and rigged the boat myself (84 CCP). There probably was a wire dedicated to the sensor that was in the system check portion of the tach but I can't remember that far back. There must have been now that I think of it, located in one of the many plugs. Still, I had a separate water temp. gauge and that is what I ran the extra wire for. I remember pulling that wire out when I sold the gauges and motor to member Keith Knecht. I have thought of adding one to my Yamaha but never have. :|

My 1987 170 has an aftermarket switch panel with toggle switches that are going bad and work intermittently.  I assume it is from water intrusion since they are not covered with boots.  Also whoever installed the panel used.... you guess it wire nuts!    And it looked like they used grease to help keep the corrosion out.  The wires are nice marine grade wire so that part is good.

I bought this "weather resistant" panel with six Carling stye rockers and breakers to replace it:

The circuits on the current panel are:  Bilge pump, nav lights, anchor light, instrument lights, cockpit lights, aerator pump (there is no pump or livewell).

The new panel has a one 6 amp, three 10 amp, one 15 amp, and one 20 amp breakers.  I plan on combining the instrument lights and nav lights into once circuit so the dash and compass lights come on with the nav lights.  So the switches I will use will be: Bilge pump, nav lights, anchor light, and cockpit lights leaving me two available circuits.

SeaBob, what amp breakers would you recommend for those circuits?

Bruce,

Nav and inst- 5A
Anc lgt- 5A
Bilge Pmp- 10A
Cockpit lgts- 5A
(2) ACC circuits- 10A each

There you go Bruce.  If you want to tie the 12V outlet into one of the ACC breakers, step that breaker up to 15A.  Some serious spotlights can suck some juice...

Effin amazing...wire nuts.  Yeah Pete, I'd be happy with that panel...

OK i guess I never posted a pic of the finished switch panel so here it is:

Well it was finished.  i was working on the boat today getting ready to install a VHF etc.  Well I hit one of the switches to see if the battery switch was on.  Hit the first switch... not lights..  so I turned on the batt switch...  still no lights... WTF?  that battery can't be dead....  check the battery switch yup its on...  flip another switch on the panel.. light comes on.. huh?  Turn on all the switches and I find the Bilge switch and the Nav lights are not working...  check the CB... ok...  WTF?  So I pull the panel... wires look good...  get out the test light...  power.. yup... The switches have failed...  come on!  I pull one switch and test it with the meter... over 50 ohms... hmmm...  I bring it in the house and I find this:

Looks like a Carling...  clicks like a Carling...  clearly NOT a Carling.  You can see where water was sitting in the switch....  so I guess I need to get some rockers switches!
