My evinrude won't go over 3000 rpm on the water....With ears on it will go over 5000....I get a chirp about every minute when I'm driving it.... Water cool coming out of engine even after a 10 minute drive... I thinking the thermostats might be the prob?would this cause the engine to run slow?I rebuild the carbs and the engine seems to run great at Idle and when I'm powering up,but then it stops and levels of.... Any ideas?

I realize yours is an Evinrude, but my old Yamaha does the same thing every time I get low on oil in the main tank.

First off Never rev the motor that high on the ears, second Like Rick said it does sound like a low oil situation.

So what your saying is low oil will retard the engine or is that just for the alarm.

My Yammy goes into "survival mode" which lowers and limits RPM to under 2500 to protect itself. When I add oil to the reservoir the alarm goes off and the motor returns to normal.
Not sure what my Johnson will do once I put it back on the 170.

Could it be a bad stator?
