Evinrude 1997 50
« on: March 15, 2013, 05:53:30 PM »
Ok guys I need a little help. I’m checking out a 1997 evinrude 50 for a friend. there is no spark. I unplugged the cable harness, by unplugging all three connectors. This should eliminate the kill switch as well as the neutral start switch. Am I right? And  should I get spark? This was a way to eliminate problems with remote starter switches in older motors. Do these motors need to have any of the three harness connectors pluged in for this test to work. I also did a ohm test on the coil, and it ohms out right. I know this won’t tell you if the coil assy is bad or not. I don’t have a PRV meter to test it. The cost for one is hard to justify for the few motors I fix every once in a while. Any sujestions? Normally I would go to the power pack with both plugs not firing. I’ll check that next if I don’t find any other way of eliminating the coil assy first. But my gut keeps telling me its the kill switch, and my shop manual, doesn't show witch wires in the harness go to the kill switch. Sooooooo I'm unable to take them out and jumper them, to by pass that switch, with out taking the control box a part. :?:       Hummmmmm You know, now that I think about it. I think i built and adapter a few years ago, that let me us my multi meter for a PRV. I better go tair my tool boxes apart to see.

Well just got back from a dealer. Pick up some pins and sockets for jumpers. Found out, for those interested. That the above mentioned test still works on newer motors. So it looks as though the power pack may be bad. Got to pick up an adapter for my multi meter, so I can use it as a PRV.

Well found out the power pack was bad. Ordered a new one. I built my own pl-88 test load and a PRV adapter for my multi meter, so I can see how much voltage the charge coils are putting out to the power pack. It work just like it is suppose to. Both turned out to be cheap to build.

Its running fine. But before it goes back I'll run some carb cleaner through it and change the plugs.  :thumleft:
