Going to HD this morn to pick up some sort of polishing wheel for my bench grinder.  Basically looking at what I would call minor surface rust...very minor.  Any suggestions?  Maybe a real fine wire wheel?

Nando, picked up a $4.50 wire wheel for a drill this morn...so far, the results are excellent!!! :thumleft:  :thumleft:  :thumleft:

Bob it sounds like you have it under control.  For future reference I wasn't sure if you have a right angle die grinder or not.  If you do I've had really good luck with the roll-lock Scotch Brite discs for that type of stuff.  Of course you can probably pick one up from Harbor freight for $15 or less.

Lowes has in the hand tool section hard and soft buffing wheels, rouge and arbors.  They completely KILL in a drill press.  For years I have slowly collected bearings, shafts etc to make a fixed setup.. No need with the wheels from Lowes..   :thumright:

FWIW..

On the hard stuff Bob I have had good luck with wet sanding with silicon carbide 400, then jumping to 1000, then onto the wheel.   Don't know how I survived without the wheels..  Speaking of tools not to survive without, have you tried cut down hacksaw blades in the HF body saw? For $9. That was a complete steal! :thumright:  :thumleft:

Well, took it all apart, about 1/2 hour later, including cleaning up the threads...



We have a happy tie bar, worthy to go on an un-named boat.  The wire wheel did the trick as the surface rust was minor, like I said.

Dave, learned the 1/2 hacksaw blade trick many moons ago at Stamas.  I keep several on hand just for that purpose... :thumright:  :thumright:  :thumright:

Sorry CB, was actually thinking about that, but stupid me...

Scott and Farley can attest to it's "former" condition...

The motors are set up on 26" centers, so I'm gonna start with a very minor toe-in, 25 1/2" on the tie bar.  Given that the extension plates will move the tie bar about 3" forward of the steering arms, the dimension will probably be more like 25 3/4", maybe 25 5/8"...very minor, but I've always believed the thrust of the props aimed towards the keel doesn't hurt...

Came off Miss Marco...along with many other dubious parts, several of which have made their way to the Hernando county landfill by now... :shock:  :shock:
