1996 Johnson 225 hp oil tank ??????
« on: March 21, 2013, 05:52:17 PM »
I just purchased a 96 johnson 225 and am trying to find the part number for the oil tank so I can buy the right one. So far I cant find anything on that part number or anything that says that motor used a remote tank. I had a johnson 175 1998  that had the 1.8 gal tank and was thinking it would be about the same thing but wanted to make sure. Does anyone know what the set up for this motor might be? and if the same 1.8 gal tank would work?

Yes, the 1.8 will work just fine.  Lots of people went with the 3 gal to minimize oil fill ups, but the 1.8 will work with your motor...

I researched all of my websites and can't find the oil tank for your engine from '96. But I want you to call Funtime Boats in Merritt Island,FL and ask for Karen or Peggy and if it exists one of those girls will find a used one if you want it. 866-538-6846. These girls know the parts business and have never let me down. Scotty was down there for our powerhead gaskets on the twin 75's for Miss Delmarva so he can attest to their professionalism...

Here's what you need right here, but you can find them cheaper...http://compare.ebay.com/like/4003214439 ... s&var=sbar

You have a Johnson 225 Ocean Runner.  This is what they used, unless, as said before, the buyer opted for the 3 gallon...

It seems many folks are disconnecting the oil injection and pre-mixing when they fill up do to risk of an oil pump failure..  Is this still something you all would recommend??  I guess that would be a consideration of mine b/f I purchase a new tank...  Just a thought.  Opinions?

I'd run the oil injection. I think by 1996 they were not even calling it VRO anymore.  I think the new name was oil meetering  system.  I'm  assuming you have the system check gauge.

What Bruce said...
I spent a bunch of time researching this question when I was rebuilding my father's OMC V4, and from everything I read, it seems only the first generation of VRO had signficant troubles.  The later generations were generally reliable, and having the opportunity to take advantage of RELIABLE technological advances that save fuel, oil, and result in a more efficient burn is the way to go in my opinion.  Obviously this is irrelevant if the engine in question doesn't even use VRO though.

Thank you all for your responses. I am gonna go with the 1.8 tank and as some of you have said I will rely on the oil pump doing the mixing itself. On my first Aquasport 22.2 deep vee cc I had a '98 johnson 175 ocean runner and had zero issues with it. Which is why I was looking to get another ocean runner for my new one due to the experience I had with the first one. I will be putting up new pics of the progress on my rebuild very soon. I live in Maryland so I'm starting to get that itch to be on the water, in other words a spark under my ass to get this boat done.

I was going to mention how Merc's are a different story when it comes to disabling the oil injection and going to pre-mix, but Eugene already said it 1 1/2 years ago...

Quote
Now a Merc efi, there is no doubt that I would drop the oil injection like a bad habit. You have to pull the powerhead to replace that nylon cam. But by the point you have to replace the small plastic cam, you likely have done greater damage already. I got lucky and noticed that the oil tank smelled slightly of gas, before I blew something. Fuel was back feeding into the oil tank leaning out the oil. Just caught a whiff of gas one day while filling the oil tank was a lucky thing, but could have been a powerhead.
