Looking at 1985 222 CC with Blisters
« on: February 22, 2013, 06:52:17 PM »
Went to look at an 85 222 Center Console tonight. Guy is selling just the hull, no motors or trailer for 1000. Boat looks pretty good and needs a good cleaning with some Starbrite but there are some blisters on the starboard side of the boat. Ill post a pic below. My first question is how scared should I be of the blisters? The hull didnt feel soft but the paint is bubbling up in a 3 foot line. Also he has twin 130s on there now and Id like to repower with a single 200 - 225. Id be interested in hearing your thoughts on going from twins to a single. Boat will be used inshore for some fishing and cruising with 6 people max. My plan would be to put it up on some blocks in a work yard and clean it up/repair the blisters, paint the sides while I hunt for a decent motor. Hopefully have the boat ready in April...

Those look to be paint blisters only.  If everything else on the boat is up to snuff, I wouldn't let that deter me.  If the blisters/bubbles are soft, but the hull below isn't, then it's probably nothing more than moisture causing the paint to separate.

These are the kind of blisters I'd be worried about-

That happens to be the hull side of my Aquasport, and its why I'll be saying goodbye to her soon :(

As far as twins vs. a single outboard, it all depends on how you plan to used the boat and what vintage outboard you'd plan on buying if you went with a single.  Here's a good article I ran across a while back on the subject - http://www.transpeninsularoutfitters.co ... ingle.html

Pretty much my thinking. If it is paint...it's just poor adherence in one area. And the way it's confined...appears to be a  prep thing...it happens.

Something as simple as missing that area on the last acetone wipe. Or introducing grease with a bad rag before it was shot.

If it is gelcoat...different story. But looks like paint, and if so, you're good.

The blisters however will make for a good price reduction tool. Point it out...cry it out....and offer 600 bucks cash and carry.

The 222 CCP is bulletproof, rides nicely, and is pretty darn fast in open water.  I'm fortunate to have crewed on JD's and CJ's rides here at the club. Have also fished a 250 CCP. You can't go wrong with a CCP. They don't  have the problems of their 22-2 twelve degree predecessors in terms of water intrusion in the stringers. The stringers are beefier and engineered differently, particularly in their orientation to the transom.  The CCP gunnels are higher, and the hull has a deeper forward entry.

A CCP is a capable offshore hull that can get skinny when set up correctly.

I don't think the CCP ever came in a hull color other than white, gray or tan so it has to be paint. Take a pin and pop one of the bubbles and see what comes out and how thick it is. Its hard to tell but it looks like there are some hairline cracks as well. Possibly some cracked body filler.

That's what I am thinking, PO's attempt at making auto body paint and finish techniques adapt to the Marine application, and that doesn't always produce lasting results...
