1979 20'CCP Questions???? (w/ pics)
« on: February 23, 2013, 08:44:26 PM »
Before T-Top

Day after Sandy so the yard is a little messy

I wanted to ask a question about the overall weight of the boat but I think I figured it out (1800lbs w/o T-Top) whats do you guys think it will be with the top?  She holds 50gals at about 6lbs a gal which is 300lbs with a full tank.  2nd question is in the stern of the boat forward of transom there is a bait well.  I plug it up and use it for storage just because I'm uncertain on how to use it. Does anyone have ideas on how to use? I would rather use it as aquasport intended but I'm assuming that if I take the plug out the well will fill with water to the waterline and no more.? My partner seems to think it will sink the boat but I disagree, any info would be much appreciated.

Now we're talkin'! Nice ride! Don't forget the weight at 1800 doesn't include the motor either. That is a 150 isn't it?

Most other people use the "baitwell" just like you. The CCP brethren will chime in soon for more info.

I had a 222 cc deep vee with the bait well in the back also. When I didnt have mine plugged it would just fill up to the water line and then drain when I pulled the boat out of the water. I never paid too much attention to it until I realized how dirty it would get in there and start to smell a little that is when I decided to plug it. But it never sank to boat or even over flowed the tank.

Thanks Capt, your right I didn't factor the motor in.  We did a lot of work to her, all grip paint, teak gunwale railings, stainless steel hand railings, leaning post with 4 rod holders, radio w/speakers, had a t-top put on, new trailer and newer used 150hp Johnson outboard.  I have a used 16mile radar I want to install but haven't yet.  Shopping around for electric trim tabs now. Any tips would be awesome.
She only holds 50gals which I wish she held more but I don't she has much room to upgrade.
I love the way she handles with the Deep-V and can't wait to see the difference with the tabs.  Probably gonna go with 9"/12"with the tabs unless anyone has some input to share on the matter.

Have any aversion to Bennett Hyd tabs?  Can't beat them...

I figured that it wouldn't pass the water line but if I left the boat in the water how well would it drain? It is a pain in the butt to clean considering you can never drain all the water out of it.

I'm staying open minded to all types and brands.  How are they priced? My buddy has Lenco's and likes them

Irish,

I will leave what type of Trim Tabs to buy for the others to talk about since I am a little biased  :D

But as far as size goes I would really recommend going one size up from the 12 x 9s.  Either the Bennett 10" x 12" M120 or Lenco 12" x 12".

The larger Trim Tabs will let you stay on plane at lower speeds which is great for holding the bow down in a chop. Also the larger Trim Tabs will actually generate less drag in relation to the lift they produce than the smaller ones. This is because they will need to be deflected less than the smaller ones to make the same amount of lift, giving them a better lift to drag ratio.

I had the 10" x 12" M120s on my '83 Aquasport 20' walkaround and they were a perfect match for the boat. I could hold the bow down at lower throttle settings and really cut through a chop.

I hope this helps,

Listen to the expert - Tabman know his stuff!  :thumleft:   And you will not get better customer service than you get with Bennett.

Regarding the livewell - most of us find it's pretty much useless.  Valve it off and keep it dry so you are not hauling a hundred pounds of water around in exactly the wrong place.  You can use it for other purposes - I've got the pump for a real livewell in mounted in mine.

See ya on the water!
