few questions for my 222 rebuild
«

I am currently rebuilding a 72 22'2. I am in the process of closing in the transom right now. i have all my wood cut out and i beefed it up with an extra layer in the inside that goes all the way down to the floor. my neighbor is a fiberglass guy so he is going to help me do the glass work this week. My buddy is a welder and i am planning on having him build me a setback bracket and a swim platform out of aluminum. anybody have any thoughts about building one out of aluminum and does anybody know the demensions i am going to need to make the bracket??
2. I am also in the process of removing the old bottom paint(which is one heck of a job) and repriming and painting the entire boat. Any thoughts of a good primer/filler? spraying vs rolling? and a good top coat as well?
3. My last question is about the center console. after i repaint the inside of the boat should i place the console farther forward since my motor will be mounted farther back on the bracket? and if so how far?
I am only 21 and this is my first rebuild so any help/tips would be greatly appreciated!

Check out Armstrong nautical products for bracket information. I have an Armstrong bracket on my boat and I couldn't be happier.
As far as the bottom paint, are you looking to repaint with anti-fouling paint? Mine is painted with Awlgrip on the hull sides.
To off set the weight of the bracket and motor setback I moved the fuel tank forward.

i am not putting bottom paint back on the boat as its going to be on a trailer. as for the armstrong brackets i have seen they are not cheap and i am only 21 so funds are limited thats why i was going to get my buddy to make me one as he is a very good welder. i just dont know the demensions i need to make it. and i do plan on pulling the fuel take while i have the console off and getting the old foam out and wood and refoaming it so maybe i will do what you did and move the tank and leave the console where its at.

Hi Randy,
I suggest you go to a local marina or dealer and ask to measure a bracket and write down the dimensions and sketch it out. Bring a protractor, tape measure, etc. and take every possible dimension. No one can give you all those dimensions. You're going to have to go out on a limb and find a bracket that you have in mind to copy from. You need to understand your engine shaft lenght to better understand the bracket mounting height. Go on some bracket manufacturer websites and see if you can extract some information from them. There is quite a bit of engineering that goes into a bracket design so all the information you can gather is your best friend right now.

thanks fitz. i am in the process of looking for another motor so i guess ill wait until i buy one to figure out what demensions i need. but i do want to get the transom done and boat repainted within the next couple weeks so any insight on a good filler/primer and topcoat would be helpful.

Hi Randy,
Here on the rebuild forum there is an abundance of information on the topics you've requested. Including bottom refinishing and transom rebuilding. Go to the search feature and look up "hull bottom", "Awlgrip", "epoxy", "high-build primer", similar buzz phrases, etc.
All of the rebuild threads make for good reading. It will take a while...but you'll learn a lot and have a better understanding of the steps ahead.
Best wishes young man

Welcome aboard randy
like gran said the search feature is your buddy :)
But you will notice that a lot of us when we rebuilt ours moved the tanks forward for different reasons, offset the bracket or in my case to put in a larger tank :)
I did put my console back within 2 inches of where it started

thanks everybody I've definitely been doing my reading. And for G Man, I was thinking about putting a bigger fuel tank in the boat because I think a 36 is just a little too small. that the reason you put a bigger 1 in?

Welcome Randy!!!
Biggest question is what are you planning on doing with the boat when you are done? Goofing off and staying inshore playing at the beach or out doing blue water fishing? If you want to go fast that means a big thirsty motor if you want to run WOT getting bugs stuck in your teeth.
! Unfortunately we can't help until you can give an idea of what you would like to do..
So, think about the biggest day or trip between fuel stops you would like to have, with the motor that you want to run and go from there. Big tanks are great, but they cost a bunch to fill and are a pile of extra fuel weight to carry if you don't really have a need for it..
Best of luck and put up some pictures so we can see the progress!

Yep, exactly
The factory tank in my 19-6 was 45 gallons, and I went to a 55 gallon poly tank by Inca, got it at greatlakesskipper.I moved the tank forward about 10 inches, and I did not make a coffin hatch, mine is under floor with pie cutouts for hose access..I knew I planned on taking mine offshore 10-15 miles at times and wanted the extra fuel for that.. :pirat: I also raised my scuppers up 2 inches as I raised my floor up also(3/4 inch) and went from 3 scuppers to 2..biggest help to you is preplanning and like dburr said, what do you want to do with your boat when finished?
As far as paint is concerned, mine has bottom paint, but the paint above that is brightsides that was rolled and tipped, the inside is brightsides white that was sprayed(roll and tip was easier)

You guys are a great help i really appreciate it as like i said i am only 21 and this is my first rebuild. I wanted a 22'2 for a long time and i am glad i have people helping me out
I mostly do inshore/nearshore fishing so i would like it to run pretty skinny(10-12 inches) but...i also have a few buddies that live down in the keys so i would like to have the boat where if i wanted to i could take it offshore 20-30 miles occasionally(at the most) which is why i went with the semi-v instead of the flat bottom. It had a 150 evinrude ficht on it when i bought the boat which is now sitting in the garage on a stand because the computer is shot and i was told that sending it back to evinrude to have it reprogrammed is a 700+$$ fix which who knows what else could be wrong with the motor. Ive also heard bad things about those motors which is why i just decided to sell it for what i can and buy a better motor. i plan on putting between a 150-200 back on the boat. i would eventually like to put a half tower on the boat as well. i will try to post some pictures of the progress within the next day or two!

If you are thinking of taking it 20-30 miles off shore, larger tank might be a good thing, always think about the rules of thirds for gas, 1/3 tank out, 1/3 tank back, 1/3 tank reserve..so depending on fuel consumption, you need to figure out the gallons needed for a 20-30 mile out trip(40-60)round trip..I have mine figured that I can go ride out and about around 25-30 miles which is about 1/3 of a tank, then head back in, hopefully it's not as far back without the riding around, and have 1/3 tank left..
just my 2 cents
