I have used travel rods in the past.
They do work, just not as well as I like.
IMO, I don't think the action feels right.
Maybe the blank they use or just the design.
At this point, I have travel cases and use the full size rods
I like best.
(I fly back and forth to Hawaii about 5 times a year).

best multi piece/travel fly rods, IMO, are Orvis. While not the same as a 1/2 piece obviously, they have the most consistant feel.
Sage is close too,,, when they bought Redington a few years back, they incorporated a lot of their technologies.
