GPS antenna placement
« on: November 28, 2012, 01:28:48 PM »
Where is the best area to put a GPS antenna in a 83 EF. I have a bimini so on top would not be an option. What other place do you think can be mounted.

Thanks,

Alberto

A cloth bimini top will NOT interfere with gps reception.  Mount it most anywhere.  Actually down low like on the console is the best place.  A high mounted gps antenna will read very erratic (by quite a few feet)  at low speed as the boat rocks and rolls with the waves.  A friend of mine has his under a fiberglass hard top and it works just fine.

Actually, Farley, a clear view is not necessary on the newer antennas.  Garmin antennas even come with a special design mount to mount the antenna under the gunnel cap.  And unlike ducers, the antenna doesn't care if the the cap is cored or not...

I got a new Garmin hand held last Christmas.  I am amazed at that thing.  Even in the house it can be shut off for months then turn it on and it acquires satellite lock in less than 10 seconds.
