"Cap" and "deck" are interchangable terms for the same thing. In the business, we call a deck on a 3-piece boat a "doughnut deck", as it really is just a rectangular "ring" that finishes off the topsides. 2-piece boats, such as the newer Aquasports, the liner and deck are 1 part. Regardless of 2 or 3 piece, without a deck/cap in place, the hullsides can be flexed very easily. It's the shoebox joint of the hull-to-deck joint that really tightens the whole assembly up...
