Sanding problems
« on: December 03, 2012, 07:53:49 PM »
I was sanding fairing on my transom with a 5 1/2" orbital and I get a lot of build up spots on the 60 grit paper. Is there anything I can do to prevent this? I'm using poly resin

Wipe it with acetone first, let dry it might help.

Thanks! Someone else told me to add wax. The pads clog up real quick at first then once the outer shell is gone it sands fine.

This will sound silly, but don't press hard on the sander.. As the paper cuts the resin the dust builds up and if you press to hard the dust can't clear itself and the friction of the excess pressure heats the dust up into resin goo that in turn sticks to the paper.

It takes a while to get the right feel.. There is nothing more satisfying then reefing on the sander to get the job done fast, but without positive dust removal like a vacuum or water the disk gums up and your screwed. You will also be shocked at how fast cheap paper dulls up and in turn loads up with gop.

Google which media is better for sanding resin, it does make a differance, off the top of my head I don't remember.

Good luck and keep your respirator clean too! :salut:  :salut:

Some brands of paper resist loading up more than others.  Buy your paper from a good autobody supply house.  I usually keep an air gun handy and blast off the paper now and then.

I keep a big block of natural rubber around and it will clean out the sanding pads when they get clogged. That doesn't help your question but it works on all types of sanding tools like orbital and belt sanders. Just run the pad on the rubber and it cleans it fast.
