I had always planned to reconstruct the deck lid using the original top skin and some Coosa board, but in the interest of time I decided to make a temporary lid using plywood. I was unhappy with the idea of buying a pricey 4x8 sheet of ¾ inch plywood, so I purchased a relatively inexpensive piece of 3/8 inch sheathing, cut it in half, and glued it together. After reinforcing it with some fiberglass mat and 6-ounce cloth and 2 coats of gel coat, it was ready for the install. The friction fit was good enough to keep the lid in place, and I installed a cord so that I could lift the lid whenever I wanted. I plan to seal the edges with some inexpensive butyl rubber tape that I got at Home Depot. Eventually I’ll add another layer of gel coat with an anti-skid additive for a final coat. This turned out so well that I’m inclined to just use this lid for now.

In order to make the fuel tank compartment lid removable, I needed a rim around the edge. Although boat builders make this from fiberglass, I installed aluminum angle iron, ¼ inch thick by 2 inches wide, under the edges of the opening. The challenge with this approach is that a reasonably even surface is required under the deck edges, something the builder never bothered with, so some careful grinding was required. I clamped the metal to the deck, drilled ¼ inch holes about 3/8 inch from the edge, removed the metal, applied sealant, and then reinstalled using 316 stainless steel machine screws, washers, and locking nuts. (You can see from the photo that one end required a different attachment method.) Using the aluminum had the added benefit of stiffening the deck a bit.

- Bow Eye backing (Coosa) installed
- Remaining hull coring in the bow finished up.
- Capped the Casting deck coring with a layer of 1708 and a few layers around the edges with a layer of 1708 tape.
- Built makeshift stringer forms to tie the stringers to the transom. Used some old glass pieces
- Filled old access holes in the forward fish/storage boxes to prepare for new Gelcoat

Some of the screws that anchor down the bimini top poles has pulled out of the fiberglass.  What's the best repair for this please?

Lots of great info in this thread.

dbiscayne's suggestion is the best...if you cannot get access to backside or repair fiberglass, a good amount of epoxy may work and then re-screwing with longer or slightly fatter screws...i had the same issue, epoxied about 3 years ago and still holding strong.

Can you get to the backside of the fiberglass? If so a thru bolt & washer w a lock nut seems like a good idea. Unless a big chunk of glass is missing then considering getting into some fiberglass repair from the back side. Bolt & nut would definitely be more appropriate here otherwise it'll probably just happen again.
If you can't get to the back side, can you move the affected anchor & the one on the other side of the boat a few inches to good glass. Lightly put a screw back into the bad hole with some silicone so it doesn't just fall out. Won't be pretty but...

1970 Aquasport 222 project boat. Classic hull with great bones, but it is a complete rebuild. I had every intention of restoring it, but the project just isn’t in the cards for me. Clean title in hand. Perfect platform for someone who wants a full restoration starting from scratch.Contact   me 786-462-4151
