Title: Sunset Anclote river ride
Post by: wingtime on October 07, 2012, 10:04:31 PM
Took the 245 out last night for a sunset ride up Anclote river.  We headed on up to Capt Jacks for some dinner with friends.

Since Fernando is a wise guy about my broken antenna here's a pic of the replacement antenna:

(thats a street light in the back ground)

The new antenna is a Gam SS-2 Stainless whip mounted on a 24" stainless extension mast.  I'm really happy with this set up.  I can talk further with it.  When I did a radio check I was able to easily reach the Tarpon Sea Tow from 54th Ave 34th st in St Pete.  When the antenna is folded it does not protrude past the back of the hard top.

Damn Bruce, the way you were talking about GAM stuff, I figured they'd be the cat's meow...and have a price tag to match.  Just checked prices...right in line with Shakespeare...

Question.  Why didn't you go with an 8 footer, instead of the 3 foot on an extension?  Afraid to repeat the same...OOPS?

Yes I'm less likely to break this one!  Besides I like the performance of this loaded base style over a standard dipole.  Yes the Gam Electronics antennas are very affordable and durable.  Hand wound and tuned...  US made with American made quality RG-58U cable on them too.  Don't forget to add in the cost of the Adapt II adapter...  My whole set up was $114 delivered from Defender marine and it out talks any Shakespeare I've ever had.  If I wanted a fiberglass antenna I'd go with Digital brand.

Wise guy? wise guy?

Moe...Curly...Larry....

I'm Shemp

Lemme tell you....a little loaded base antenna is the catzazz.

My Shakespeare sits six feet off the ground on the jonboat. And talks to the CG 55 miles away like they are on a cell phone.

Up high like that...no telling how far she'll talk. Test her out Bruce....call a specific CG station 60 miles off and ask a pertinent question....like time of low tide at their pass.

And yes I am aware....frivolous calls for radio checks are illegal.

Bruce, are using 27 for radio checks?  Scotty, do you guys have SeaTow's automated radio check system up there?

Depends on which Sea Tow automated check station I'm trying to hit.  Usually 26 or 27 depending on the station. Sea Tow has a find the nearest station on the web site.

At my place 27 gets you Homosassa, McCraes on the river.  About 22 miles as the crow flies, even though I hail Hernando Beach SeaTow...

Well, reckon we do. But I'd rather call the Coast Guard. That's what we pay taxes for.

For the expenditure, prefer a human voice

Our CG will tell you to switch to 68 or call Seatow.  So I don't bother them anymore...

What, you don't like the NOAA girl that says St pETErsBurg...?

Capitol letters emphasizing the pronunciation.  Almost sound Russian sometimes...

It's tax money. And no slight on anyone here in the military.

If I call for tide times at the local pass....they respond in a professional manner.

Russian girls......we don't have them here.... :(

Heck here they transmit a warning now and then about how it is illegal to use 16 for radio checks or something like that.    I like the Sea Tow automated radio check since it plays back your transmission so you can hear what your radio sounds like.
