You can paint over paint. But you can't spray gelcoat over paint.
Gelcoat is the ideal finish for below the waterline... if you can get to remnant gelcoat/polyester-impregnated fiberglass (NOT epoxy).
Which appears to be opposite of what you've been dealt.
You'll hear many ideas...depends on your needs and how far you'd like to go.
Paint does a fine job...until you hit something.
-
You can use Interlux VC for the bottom paint. It doesn't have a great shine to it but after wet sanding and buffing it will look like gel coat.
For the top side paint it all depends on your budget. If you can afford and know how to use Awlcraft 2000 that would be my choice.
-
if i have to wet sand and buff vc its the same as going with origanal gel coat i guess im going to just have to sand the hole bottom probly alot beter then paint ill just have some one spray it and ill help with wet sanding if anyone knows some one who gel coats and want to do a side job let me know my email is Dade_county_biz@hotmail.com thanks for help

dcb,
It's a boat, and like all boats, depends on how far you'd like to take it.
If you think you'd like to hang onto this ride...grind the funk from the bottom, get past the nasty, the bondo, the :*: repairs, and grind straight down to the factory gelcoat and near the polyester resin fiberglass.
This is a good investment. Get down to the factory substrate...then spray fresh gelcoat.
You'll be great on a rebuild, and great on a resale.
Take a look at the quality Tampa rebuilders.
They feature gelcoat below the waterline.
-
There is still one question. Do you care if the bottom of the hull is a different color? If you don't you can coat the "primer" section with epoxy mixed with graphite. This of course will be black, but it lays down nice and slick and it does make the bottom of the in-water section of the hull totally resistant to water blisters. Do it this way and forget it. The epoxy will bond with old glass much better than any styrene based product. It all gets down to if you care if its black or not. If you want to try this route post back and I can explain it in detail or look for Maddog's thread over on bateau2.com as he used this on his 22-2 build. :afro:
-
You COULD go with epoxy.
But once you change, you pretty much can never go back...without a lot of work.
-
I'm halfway done with the sanding might as well finish get her fully naked and redress with a fresh gelcoat she will be trailered no bottom paint. Thanks for all the helpful comments.
-
All done with grinding the bottom now to try and sand everything smooth does it mater if it's not that smooth will gel coat fill in some of the little waves left behind by the grinder?
-
Nope, the gel is like paint, its not a filler.
Get a long hand sander, or an air powered "longboard" and keep gettin' it
Is the boat upside down?
-
Unfortunately not upside down I only have a 5" orbital with 40 grit. Don't really have much tools. Guess I'll get as smooth as I can its the bottom not really to concern on how it looks as long as the gel coat bonds good..
-
Gotcha.
See if you can go to a rental tool place and rent a long hand sander. You'll be able to knock down the high spots.
The gel will bond like crazy, no worries there.
-
I'll give the tool rental a call and see if thay have one thanks gran398 u giving me the motivation to finish and do it right because I was just about to bottom paint and put it in the water as is. Hopefully I could put more pics up it tells me something about pixels when I try to put up from my phone

As you see, your photos are loaded in the forum Photo Gallery.
1. Do you have a computer to access this site or are you doing everything from your phone?
2. Were the photos in your Aqua gallery taken with your GS III?
The Aqua gallery automatically sizes photos (your photos) to fit in a post. Lewis' post shows those photos and I'll bet he did noting but go to your gallery, right click on the pic and then click "save image location". When he created a new post, he clicked in the "Image" bubble in the toolbar and then pasted that location into the reply.
That's all well and good when you are using a PC to copy and paste photos into a post. Your GS III doesn't have a mouse so you need to copy a photo's location within the GS III "Gallery". I'm going to fiddle with one of your pics from my phone while in your gallery and see if I can copy and paste it into a reply. This phone business isn't my forte but I'd bet it's not that hard.
The logical answer is to take the pic with your phone and e-mail it to your computer. It's all very easy from there but....
There's many different ways to skin a cat.
More to follow.
-
This pic is gleaned from your gallery with my GS III.
Using Firefox, I opened the Forum, went to the Photo Gallery/Members/you, selected the pic (that you had loaded earlier) with a finger touch (duh), then selected the "Linked Image" box to the right of the photo by holding my finger on the box. This gives a pop up menu allowing you to save the link and touched "copy all".
Then it's business as usual. To insert a pic into your post, touch and hold the dialog box (where you're typing your post) and another menu box appears. Touch paste and you're home free. Do not (as I was doing) touch the toolbar boxes above the dialog box (Thank You Fearless Leader :salut: ).
Now I know that you can take a pic with your cell phone, load to your phone gallery, access the Forum site online, open your Member Gallery, download from phone to Aqua site and finally add it to a post. All with a smart phone.
PS...... For all you younger geeks that do this daily,
Faaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaak you.
This ol' bird learned something today.

Proper term would be Theodolite model T16  but the framed document above it is my OUPV license, aka a 6-PACK license.

Congrats on the success posting the pics! The only problem is we expect many, many many more!! LOL
Those are slat end holders for the support bows for your cover.
-
sorry what kind of cover goes there does anyone have pics of what it is because I'm lost
-
A custom boat cover. These are where you insert the fiberglass bows to push up the cover.
-
You get a good idea here. Both sockets (what you have) and different type bows. More than you'll ever want to know.

Another question how can I repair under rub rail all the screws are lose and tore out how can I fill in. (http://www.classicaquasport.com/gallery/data//634/20120902_170210-1772316284.jpg) (http://www.classicaquasport.com/gallery/showphoto.php?photo=5861&title=20120902-170210-1772316284&cat=634)
-
Easiest/best is to remove the rubrail, sand off the mess, then fill the holes with marine-tex, etc.
Then reinstall the rail, screwing to fresh glass, rather than where the holes were.
-
thanks gran did exactly what you said take pics tomorrow
-
Don't forget the countersunk screws under the rub rail that hold the deck cap onto the hull!

On my 91 WAC, they're rivets. At least the ones I can see are.

hopefully Wednesday or Friday I'll be spraying first layers of Gelcoat.

Easiest/best is to remove the rubrail, sand off the mess, then fill the holes with marine-tex, etc.
Then reinstall the rail, screwing to fresh glass, rather than where the holes were.
When doing this, is there any issue with the hull wanting to bow in resulting in not getting the drill or the screw to pull the hull to the cap? (Please let me know if I need to elaborate that question)
-
There are two sets of screws. First set bonds the cap to the hull, second set the rubrail to the cap.
You're good to go :thumright:
