Aquasport Mechanicals - things that need a wrench, screwdriver or multimeter => Engines & engine woes => Topic started by: kb2ski on September 06, 2012, 06:52:44 AM

It has been a long time since I visited this site. I have done a lot to my Aquasport and now and considering repowering. The engines I have now are twin Evinrude 200HP 2-strokes. The two two-strokes run fine but I am considering changing to a single engine (2-stroke fuel injected or 4-stroke) Budget is very important and I don't want to dump a ton more money that the entire boat is worth so anyone have any economical options. Also, I will possibly have two 2-stroke available for sale that somone may want. There was never any hour meter on them as I don't think this was standard practice but my mechanic has taken care of them and they run good. Thoughts on putting two 150's, a single 2-stroke direct fuel injection, or single 4-stroke on it? Any ranges on cost would be great.

I can't comment on re-power other than twins were the norm but.....
I'd like to see some photos of what you have done. The last ones were when you first started working on the hull. It would be interesting to see how she came out.
Good luck.

kb,
Realizing that you are going to be dropping from the current 400HP to 250-300HP if you go with a single, your options are pretty limited from a "cheap" standpoint. The current 300 HP singles, whether 4S or 2, are all relatively new, and thus will carry a heftier price tag. Suzuki 300 (4S), 300 Vrod (4S), 300XS (2S), 300 Etec (2S) and 300 Yam (4S) are your offerings, with the Yam being the new kid on the block.
If you choose to go with twin 150s, your choices are quite a bit more varied, and in your price range. Hell, I am listing for a friend a pair of Yamaha 200 HPDIs with all rigging, binnacle, gauges, for $9K OBO, and I know he'd take less...
Was that a shameless plug, CB?

I've never known the "s" word to be in your vocabulary.
That stated, the point of the thread is well taken with your post. Re-powering without total loss of said investment in an older hull is strongly supported with twins AND rigging for 9 grand. I believe that was the prerequisite set in the original post.
The thought of buying one for my boat (probably not an option) was discussed at home. Fiscal constraints deemed it unfeasible. :(
