Post by: cboham30 on April 27, 2006, 05:23:49 PM
i tried some of the peel away paint remover on about a 1 sqft area. it seem that it left this spot on the hull soft after i scraped it away. is normal? will it harden back up with time? is this stuff worth messing with or should i just call and get my hull soda blasted? any pros and con of sodablasting?  thanks for any input

There are several Peel Away products.  The two marine products are formulated not to attack gelcoat.  http://www.dumondchemicals.com/paint_remover.htm (http://www.dumondchemicals.com/paint_remover.htm).  If you are using the Safety Strip formulation what you may be seeing is a softening of an epoxy barrier coat that was applied sometime in the past.  If that's the case, use the Marine Strip II product which will not attack the barrier coat.

I used Marine Strip II and a powerwasher on a Whaler and had good results.  If you are using the right product and are seeing a problem, talk to your supplier or call the manufacturer and see what their tech people have to say.
