Title: Gunwale and Deck cleanup/painting
Post by: jaycal3 on August 14, 2012, 09:58:28 PM
So I have been thoroughly enjoying my 250 Osprey since re-powering with a brand new E-Tec and having everything rewired.  The only thing left that is really bothering me is the way the interior surfaces look.  I know the boat is "older" but I would like to spruce it up and was thinking of painting the interior surfaces white for the normal areas and either a blue or light grey for the nonslip areas.  No product(s) seem to be able to get the job done so what paint should I use and is this something I should be tackling on my own?  I am fairly handy and not afraid to get dirty... I just don't want to mess it up by using the wrong product and have it not stick.

jay, the dark blue that is shown...gonna assume that it was applied by a previous owner. Am sure the dark blue is tough on  bare feet on a hot summer day.

Is it paint with a nonskid additive, or is it dark blue gelcoat with cabosil? Or is it Rhinohide, or a similar coating?  Based on the pic, looks to be Rhinohide, etc. Nice install, BTW.

Depending on what it is...and that will be the determining first step...we'll go forward.

Want a compatible material going back down without too much work for you.

Thanks for the response.  The coating that is down now is called "Tuff Coat non-skid coating".  According to the can its a "rubberized/sound deadening non-skid polyurethane".  Should I stay with the same?  What type of prep woud be necessary - I am sure thats on the can so I will look later when I get home.

Also, for the areas that are not coated, I would like to get them to look as new as possible.  Can they be painted with a glossy marine grade paint?  I would also like to coat my Fiberglass T-Top.

You can sand the Tuff Coat with 80 grit and recoat with a different color Tuff Coat.  John Dupree did his deck in Durabak  - check out the thread:  viewtopic.php?f=2&t=6577&p=49802&hilit=durabak#p49802 (http://www.classicaquasport.com/phpbb3/viewtopic.php?f=2&t=6577&p=49802&hilit=durabak#p49802)

Looks like a similar substance... may be a bit cheaper too!  I will remove all the hardware, sand and prep and then reapply some type of non-skid substance.

I used Monsta-Liner on my Jeep - I wonder how it would do on the boat?!

So the question that still remains for me is what to do with the white non-coated gunwales... I want to get them looking nice and bright white again.  Is there a paint or product that will do that?

Depending on the condition of the gelcoat in the you could just wet sand and buff the areas back to life in the Non nonskid areas!

JD isn't as happy with the Durabak here lately. It is cracking, and he says it is tough to clean.

I am seriously going to consider that Monsta-Liner... The Jeep community loves it and it is so durable that many 4 wheelers are "painting" their entire Jeeps with it, exterior and all.  And unlike the Rhinoliner, Line-x and Herculiner its not rough on your skin - it doesnt hurt...

I just dont know how it will hold up to salt water, but then again I wash the boat down after every fishing trip anyway.

Maybe I will just stay with the "Tuff Coat"... I will also look into that Presta stuff... the boat really needs a bit of TLC, which is the least I could do after putting a nice shiny new motor on it.

Sorry for the constant questions, but a top such as the one I have, made of fiberglass can just be painted right?  If so, what do you think... blue?  grey?  white?
