Title: Kicker motor - 9.9 Yamaha
Post by: Wine Down on August 13, 2012, 10:06:11 PM
I have a 1999 215 DC powered bya Mercury Optimax 200 HP, the boat and motor have 436 hours of use. Since I am taking the boat to Mexico and will be using it in the Sea of Cortez I want to install a kicker motor. Tucson is limited on boat dealers but there is a great shop called Catalina Marina. They sell Merc and Yamaha, I am thinking about goining with the 9.9 HP long shaft. I will only be using for back up to get me to shore or back to the marina.
Does anybody have any input on the Yamaha 9.9? Comments are appreciated.

Hi Phil
We be talking 2 or 4 stroke?
If you are talking 4 stroke they are a great kicker
I am on my second 9.9 Yamaha high thrust  since I bought my AS in 90.
First one I would guess I had 2000 hours or more on it.
The 9.9 4 stroke on my boat now I bought new in 2001.
I have a hour meter on this one...reads over 2000 hours....runs like a top.
I change oil every 100 hours and I think I changed the water pump twice.
Great motors as long as you maintain em

They have got me back home more than once when the main engine took a dump :puker:

Go with a four stroke yam, I run a 15hp high trust for a kicker and it will push me 7 mph loaded up with gear.

Yes I was looking at the 4 stroke but not the high thrust. Thanks for the feedback! I was told that it would get me a minimum of 5 mph.
I realize it is for safety anf piece of mind but I am also trying to watch the $ !

Thanks,

Phil

Those numbers might be under ideal conditions, throw in some strong tides and wind, different story.
I would suggest spending the extra bucks for a high thrust model.
They have a much larger prop and are geared different than the standard model.
Just my 2 cents

The high thrust model is designed as a kicker or sailboat motor, not as a dinghy or small jonboat motor.  The high thrust has a different gear ratio and a different prop.

It's a better choice for a larger boat, but you can always change the prop.

Shop around a bit and you may find a deal:
