Hi all,
My name is John and I am restoring a 1979 Aquasport 17 I removed the console and the fuel tank because I assumed the tank was leaking, and it was. After trying to get the fill and vent lines out I realized that they were foamed in. this is what I had to do to get the fill and vent lines out. I will submit photo's when I figure out how to up load it. Love this site.

Good luck! The fill and vent hoses most likely aren't foamed in, they just feel like they are. Even back then, builders realized that eventually fuel hoses are going to have to be replaced, so they wouldn't purposely foam around them...

that was back when things where easier to work on, now, ive seen builders foam over wire harnesses, hoses, bolts/screws, everything! and ive also seen duct tape under gelcoat

Wait till you see the photos, I spent two days digging out the foam which was soaked with old fuel before I could get the fill line out. Glad to say that it is out, and the new fill line is in.

Good deal. There are many posts here on tank install...ck. the search feature.
-
Mine were foamed in as well, along with the the stern wiring. Not fun.
-
My stern wiring is not foamed in just my fill and vent lines. I now have my new fill line installed and I still need to dig out my vent line and install the new vent line. You are correct, no fun.

Good luck with the build! Here is a pic of my 1979 170....[attachment=0:20yq1o4k]DSCN0586.jpg[/attachment:20yq1o4k]

Welcome to the site (forgot to say that before!). I've found that there is little consistancy between the 17's. I really think it was up to the 2 guys putting the thing together as to how the boat was layed up. Some have foam on the outside of the stringers......some dont (in my case). Some have foam in between the liner and the hull sides....some dont. Mine had a ton in the stern.....making it really fun to run the bildge pump.
Take a peek at my blog, as you go back to older posts, it might be helpful. PM me if you have any questions!

Arnaldo, That is a beauty!!! Very nice boat
Fletch, Many thanks for the warm welcome. I will check out your blog when I get a chance. Bought the boat about 6 months ago and been slowly getting back. When I pulled out the Fuel Fill line, it had a split in it which explained the old fuel soaked in the foam. I have been looking through this site alot before registering and have seen some beauties! Mine is a work in progress.

Mine is a pile of garbage:) Literally, everything was soooooo far gone, it's taken a lot of work just to make the thing "safe".
I've been working on it for a year now. Granted, it took this long because I live up north, which really puts a damper on fiberglass work when it's 12 degrees outside.

Fletch,
At least you have an indoor place to work, I am constantly taking leaves and sticks out of my boat every day and it is not sitting under a tree. Your boat looks great now!!! My boat originally had an 88 Evinrude Special on it (But it did not come with that engine) and I have a 1984 Johnson 70 hp, and the mounting holes holes did not line up. The two top bolts did but the but the bottom bolt holes did not, so I epoxyed dowels in the holes and used thickened epoxy to cover both inside and outside the transome (I cut the dowels short) and sanded it down. I tried to upload pictures in the gallary and it said that they were uploaded, but they are not there. Now that your glass work is done, you can spend the winter rigging her up!
I live in New York and am all too familiar with 20 degrees, although, I have striper fished well into december if the weather permits and hopefully I will be doing that on my 17 this fall!

I need to have the boat out by the end of the month. I've been working on her every day after work, and at least one whole day of the weekend. My arms have been itchy for 3 months, and my boogers are 85% fiberglass. That was pretty gross.....I digress.
I am hoping to have this thing painted and the motor mounted by next weekend.

you look like you are almost there, are you good with wiring? I have wired a ton of boats, started in a marina at 15 painting bottoms, worst job in the world. I know about ichy arms, mine iched for days after digging out the foam and rubbing my arms on freshly cut fiberglass. If you have any questions about wiring just ask, If I don't know I can get the answer.

This a picture of the Stern, the transom was redone before I bought it. I have a 1984 Johnson 70 and the top holes lined up but the bottom holes did not so I had to dowel the bottom holes, which I soaked with West Epoxy. I cut the dowels a little short and mixed epoxy with the West system 404 high density filler and mixed it till it had the consistency of peanut butter and filled the holes. The boat was blue when I bought it, I don't love the color, but I will live with it for now.

You're doing a good job already. Are you having to remove the deck?
Keep us informed with pictures. It's fun to watch these projects come back to life. I'm almost finished with a '76 170. I'm waiting on my motor guy to bring the rebuilt power head for my 1998 Evinrude 115 Special.

Looks like she's in pretty decent shape, at least compared to my pile. What are you planning on doing? Is the transom solid?

Good luck! The fill and vent hoses most likely aren't foamed in, they just feel like they are. Even back then, builders realized that eventually fuel hoses are going to have to be replaced, so they wouldn't purposely foam around them...
Guess what Bob? Aquasport did "foam in" the supply and vent hoses for the fuel tanks in the 70s and 80s. In addition, the drain hose for the coffin on the CCPs was also foamed in under the deck. :x

So true.
Mine were also on the 84. Keith K. had to deal with those after I got the hull to him. I ran a new fill line through the console to avoid dealing with digging out the old one. Used the original vent.
Oh well.

The Tank is in!!! Installed the Tank today in the Tank coffin, and hooked up the new fill and vent lines. I am going to strap the tank down with the original straps, but I have a great idea to keep them off of the tank. I cut strips of 1/4 inch King Starboard and used 5200 and glued them to the bottom of the tank. Yes 5200 sticks to King Starboard like concrete! To keep the straps from touching the tank, I took 1 inch strips of the 1/4 inch King Starboard Heated in the middle with my heat gun and bent it in a 90% position. When it cooled it was hard as rock and fit perfectly up the side and across the top of the tank. I will take pictures and post them to show you what I mean, but it will work perfectly!

Nice Work! Let's see a few pictures!
