HELLO,
i m new to the forum. i am goin to be looking at an '88 290xf with twin 5.7 volvo penta as the powerplant. i have been reading pro's and cons. from what i hear they are gm 350 motors with volvo bolt on stuff. not sure of the transmissions. would thesde be typicall volvo's also ?
if any one could shed some light or give the new guy some advice,,,,,,,, i would greatly appreciate it
thanks :salut:
-
Mine has twin 350's (Inmdars) and I can say that it sucks down some gas. My previous boat (23' single inboard) had the same motor and got about 4 times the mileage.
I really like the balance between cabin space and cockpit.
Mine seems to take a lot of tab to keep the bow down when running.
Ride seems dry enough in the little bit of seas I've run mine in.
I don't have a tower. I think I'd like one (last boat had one) but at the same time, the boat is slow enough without one...hate to add more weight/wind resistance.
Engine access is fair compared to what I'm used to. Some stuff is easier to get at (anything in the middle) some stuff is near impossible (stuff outboard of each motor.)
If you have anything specific, feel free to ask. I'm still figuring mine out, but I give you my thoughts...
Thanks,
Ryan

HELLO,
IM NEW AND NEED SOME HELP,
IM GETTING READY TO PURCHASE AN 88 AQUASPORT 290 TONAMENT MASTER.
WHEN I DO A BOAT FAX IT SAYS FORESPAR MARITIME SVCS. INC. I WOULD HAVE THOUGHT IT WAS GINMAR INDUSTRIES OR AQUASPORT. CAN SOMEONE SHED SOME LIGHT ON THIS FOR ME ?
WERE THERE DIFFERNT COMPANIES BUILDING THE AQUASPORT HULLS ? IF SO IYONE FAMILIAR WITH THIS MANUFACTURER THAT IS NO LONGER IN BUSINESS OUT OF FLORIDA
ANY HELP WOULD BE GREATLYAPPRECATED
THANKS
-
I APPRECIATE THE RESPONSE. IM TRYING TO FIGURE OUT THE TITLE THE GUY IM BUYING THIS BOAT FROM. THE VINIS COMING UP AS FORESPAR MARITIME SVC. INC AND THE OWNER SAYS THE TITLE SAYS WELLCRAFT. IM CONFUSED.
WHATS YOUR TITLE SAING ON AS FAR AS MANUFACTURER ?
-
OK,
Let's see if we can help.
First off, turn off your Caps Lock.
Second, will you share the HIN # (known as a hull ID not a vehicle ID)?
Third, "Genmar" has no bearing as to that year hull. 1988 year hulls were built by Aquasport in Hialeah FL. and not produced by anyone else.
The story starts with the HIN #. That's what we need in order to try and offer help.
Good luck.
-
thank for the response
sorry about the caps lol,,,,, i wasnt yellin i promise
asth1323g788
the owner says the title says wellcraft. i just want to make sure im not gettin taken
-
Stand by please.
Running HIN #
Well, from what I see, it's an 88 model built in July of 87.
The AST lists as Forespar Maritime SVC.
Do you have a photo of the boat or the title?
-
thank you very much
-
Does it look similar to this model?

Or this?

YES VERY SIMILAR BUT NOT EXACT, IT AS A LARGE GREY AND BLACK BAND THAT SAYS AQUASPORT RUNNING FROM TO STERN TO BOW.
-
sorry first time posting pictures
-
i do not have the title yet,the owner is getting me a title # so i can do a title check for liens insouth carolina where its currently titled. he said the manufacturer is listed as wellcraft
i just thought that was odd, could there have been a typo of some kind or mix up upon manufacturing of this boat ?
-
Well,
That sure looks like an Aquasport to me. It carries the decals of a mid to late 80s model.
The HIN # (first letters) is "different". I would have guessed they would have been ASP.
ASP were the ones in use in the 80s. Could the lettering on the hull have been misread and transferred to the title? Would not be the first time this came up on the Forum. To confirm, you need to see the HIN # on the hull itself. That would be your "insurance".
Since the boat is out of state, several photos of the transom with a close up of the HIN # (if that is the location).
Good luck.
-
i'll have to verify vin and hull in person,,,, but the wellcraft as manufacturer is what im baffled by
-
I'm not even a Wellcraft novice but compare the porthole windows in your photo with the link I provided to the 88 Wellcraft.
-
Definitely a big Aquasport - it looks like the 290s that are becoming members lately, in droves (economy must be getting better  ).
As CB said, the bigger boats might not need a HIN but it is usually on the outside of the transom, possibly starboard side (where my 230s is).
Welcome aboard (and try to keep the cap locks off - people are sooo touchy on that  )
-
will do on the caps lol
i appreciate all your help guys
thanks
-
:bounce: we finally got the answer to the hin#
my friend misunderstood and thought it was a "t" instead of a "p"
yeeeeha,,,the title was checked with the state of sc and verified by them and the owner it is an aquasport titl

If I told you what I paid for my boat, you'd call me a liar. I tripped and fell onto a hell of a deal. Economy still sucks... :)

It's not unlike the 19-6s and 170s we saw a few years ago. Almost like a cult. :o

290s are cool! Couple of Yanmar 6s in her...oh yeah!

That would be a good match for my Slickcraft!

I discussed Yanmar 4's as well as 6's and the small cummins.
Mechanic's advice: spend that money on gas.
Takes a lot of fill-ups and repairs to recoup a $30k difference in price.
That said, if you want to sponsor my diesel repower, I'll haul the boat tomorrow Seabob. Heck, I'll call the marina emergency number and get it pulled tonight
-
Hokie,
Understood. Typical upcharge, single motor, new, gas to diesel, about $25K...times 2.
Can't foot that bill!!!
-
hey guys,, finally got my boat in my slip and it ran great getting her there, just going thru and learning stuff. i had posted on the resources forum not knowing if i was in the right forum. i was wondering if any of you guys new of how to obtain a owners manual showing all the components and tank loations etc.
any help would be greatly appreciate
-
There used to be some manuals available on the Wellcraft web site.I emailed them to see if they still have them and if they will share, will let you know thier response. However most manuals don't have much usefull info.Your best resource are your fellow 290 owners right here! :salut:
-
The famed south Florida yacht surveyor and author David Pascoe published a compelling article on gas versus diesel power on fiberglass hulls under 35 feet.
Will dig it up and post tomorrow.
-
Here it is.
This gent's website is chock full of info. And yep, the inventor of what we have been calling the Pascoe method of fuel tank install.
Enjoy!
