Anyone have experience or input on installing an outboard bracket (such as a D&D or similar) on a 170? Just a thought to buy cockpit space -- and perhaps net some other benefits?

I would not recommend it. That will put the stern lower in the water. These boats are already sensitive to weight in the stern. I have a jackplate on mine and it did change how it sits in the water. If you use a bracket with floatation it could work for you. But with all that why not just start out with a 19-6?

I'd like to own a 19'6 but they don't come available very often, and the 170 I do own is in good shape, and the transom has been redone. My only complaint is the lack of cockpit space aft and I wondered if anyone else had attempted to remedy that by installing an outboard bracket on a 170. And yep, with the 115 2-stroke I have on the boat, the stern sits low. The other problem is that the outboard's bracket partially covers the drains on the outside of the transom so that I can't use one-way ball-type scuppers on them to drain the cockpit. I am thinking about cutting new drain holes but am not sure where...

Unless your going with a full transom water will come over the transom when you back down

When you come off plane it will get dangerous with the water rushing back up on the transom. I could see a small set-back jack plate but you should probably skip the bracket. I can take you to see a 170 that sunk on it's maiden voyage after adding a bracket and 4 stroke and coming off plane the first time.

Thanks for the input, guys. I figured the filling-in of a full transom would be required, and since most of the older AS transoms need to to be rebuilt anyway that perhaps someone had attempted the full-transom/bracket route. As for finding a 19-6, there is a 1999 Osprey with a '98 115 Johnson up here I can get for $4500 on a decent aluminum trailer. It's a Florida rig brought up here to the Great Lakes six years ago and been under wraps ever since...
