Whats up fellas. My name is Curtis and I am the proud owner of a 1975 Aquasport 19'6" as of saturday. I plan to rebuild the boat as best as I can and have some of the more detailed items handled by professionals :lol: I love the lines on these boats and am looking forward to learning a great deal in doing this project. I am also extremely happy to have come across this site and in a few short trips through the forums am certain this is the right place :cheers:

Great looking boat. I just bought a '74 the Saturday before you, and am in about the same position, except your hull and paint look a little better than mine do. Jealous of your badges, I've got all of 1/2 of one of them; but like you my original rub-rail is also in pretty good shape. If you re-do anything that's originial (rod holders, etc.) let me know and I'll buy your old ones. I've got 2 salvagable rod holders, but one is busted and one was missing. Have fun with it, she looks pretty good to start with. :thumleft:

The front vents are neat....to the extent that they are there, along with the rigging chase...will speculate no rebuild work has occurred.
Should you guys want to keep the original rodholders...they can br re-chromed if they are chrome on brass. If marinium...they can be stripped, sanded, and buffed.

Scotty, I believe Aggie was referring to the teak rod holders that also lend support to the deck cap.

If I still had mine you would be welcome to them but unfortunately I pitched them. I hate those dam things! I have a buddy that made some made out of starboard for his 22-2, I think I broke my toe the last time I was out in his boat.

Guys, the vents are very cool, functional too. That is the reason that you have no bilge access. The vents were original flow thru, venting the bilge out the port aft vent.
Many members feel that this is the most classic feature of the Classics.
Pretty to look at too. Unfortunately, no one has fabbed a set yet...could be cast in stainless to original specs with time and money. Though close approximations exist in the marketplace now.

Welp, mine were cheap plastic and broken. I figured there would have to be a stainless replacement out there. Already got a stainless replacement for the aft port vent, so I figured for sure there would be an option on the market somewhere.

Nice looking rig, I know your thrilled. Looks Like the transom has been reworked a bit, maybe to accommodate a 25" shaft motor. Are you planning on running her for awhile before the rebuild? Lastly if your in the Tampa area, you should come out to the gathering were having this weekend at Egmont Key.

Welcome to Classic Aquasport! You won't find a nicer group of guys anywhere. I have a 19-6 with a born-on date of 1976 that I'm rebuilding right now. I hope to have all of the fiberglass work finished in time to gelcoat mine by the end of next week. There are tons of threads on here about our particular model with lots of great advice and ideas.
There is only.one thing you need to be warned about with this site..... IT'S ADDICTING! lol

moving in about a week and a half and will finally have a covered home to work on the new ride. Itching to get started....
I am thinking of how to put the boat on stands and was thinking of making a bracket stand with 2x6 like a trailer bunk? Any ideas or thoughts on this would be helpful

maybe blow off the 1x tubing to skip the welding and use 4x4 fence post style treated lumber for legs and just make a base?

on Classicmako, there is a thread where a guy built a pretty sweet cradle for his boat. 6x6 running side to side (of the boat) as a base, then 2x6 or 2x8's (on edge) running the same as the bunks on a trailer. get some ange braces and maybe castors if your on concrete and your good to go. there might even be a link to it on here but I dont have time to search for it at the moment. I will try later tonight if someone doesnt beat me to it.
Looks like you have a good foundation for you to start your rebuild!

any links to making an outboard motor holder/stand?
This is a home made bracket that I put together, first choice was 1x3 channel iron but when I pricecd it I opted for the 2x4 scrap that was laying around. I used it for a 70hp 3cyl Merc and needed to keep the footprint low due to shop space issues. I needed to replace the bottom swivel arm yoke and swivel bushing. All things being equal I would extend the front wheels so when the engine is tilted up it would not be as tempted to take a head dive to the floor..
Front: The only 2x6 is where the engine was bolted.. The legs are 39 1/2 inches long. I remember that I wanted the motor to sit at a comfotable height but why the extra 1/2 inch? Beats me, must have been a good idea at the time.. :?: The legs were spaced at 20 1/2 inches. Again, due to limited space. I wish that it was more like 25 to give room to work on the swivel bracket. I had to replace the manual relief screw on the PT/T and was lucky that the power head was off so I could completely remove the bracket because I did not have enough room to get the screw out..

The base is 33 inches long and the angle is what ever the transom angle on the Whaler is, like 12-15 degrees..

The bracing on the bottom is cut back so the skeg had room to swing. The outside dimension on the base is 30 1/2 inches. 4 casters made the rig very mobile..

I bought a used automotive engine stand off CL for like $30. Just had to get a little creative to get the arms to line up with the holes in the transom mount of my Merc 115.
This is the original one I bought from Harbor Freight. Way more heavy duty, but same concept. I swapped it out for the $30 when I bought a 200 OX66 that I needed to store for a while.

Got everything off the console and all wiring disconnected including the throttle assembly. All I have left is the steering column. I removed the cap with a tiny alan wrench, then after a little work got the nut off...there was a pool of water inside the steering housing. Once the nut was off it looked pretty clean inside. Now I have to get the "bearing looking" fitting off to remove the steering wheel and get to the screws holding the housing in.
Do I need a puller or something to get this out?

Once I get this off then I only have to remove the railing on the console before I can begin sanding and bondo/resin work to bring the console back to origional shape.

Also, I have done some resin work on surboards over the years but never on a boat. I could use some input on the proper materials to use...I will start with the small holes and get comfortable in the bigger stuff as I go. Do you use bondo? or just a marine resin? Also what is the best primer to spray can on after it's complete or during the process. It may be a while before I get it painted and want to protect it best I can.

So I had an hour and a half of free time this afternoon and finally got to get the console out and the fuel tank cover off. Tank has 10/74 as a manufacturing date. Built in Chicago Ill for a company in West Palm Beach that tested and delivered to Aquasport. That will definately go by by:)
So the first question I have is the two hoses coming off the forward starboard side of the tank. Is one a filler and the other a delivery to the engine?
I could use some advice to remove the tank. Can I remove the lines from the tank and disconnect the sending unit to remove? I knocked on the tank and it sound hollow with an echo so I am guessing it does not have much fuel in it. I was thinking of removing the hoses and just stuffing the ends with some rags until I get the floor up so I can replace with new.

This should be fun..LOL..there was an updated Blue Sea Systems wiring board but It doesn't look to me like it's a new run...I am going to replace it all

There were so many holes behind the starboard on the console that I decided to use a jigsaw and cut out the entire front side in order to replace more efficiently without trying to cover every single hole.

There was also a wood board semi-glassed into the mid height center of the console that I cut out...it was't glassed except for the edges...rotten

next step hopefully tomorrow is to remove the tank and then clean up good prior to removal of the floor.
Best place to pick up marine grade plywood for the console? And any suggestions on what type of glass/cloth to use in the repair of the console. Seems like I have seen bondo used sometimes as well? I have only fixed surfboards with resin...

No, it is the vent hose. Your pickup hose (delivery to motor) is seen in one of your long shot photos of the tank. It appears to be on the starboard side toward the back of the tank. It looks like the fuel line to the motor rests in a notch cut into that board you were questioning on top of the tank.

So, got the bow rail off, the nav lights and vents from the bow wtc..
Also got the fuel tank out finally today!! :D
Started making the initial cuts in the floor. Just set the skillsaw at about an inch to barely go thru. Made an outline and split into two pieces.
When I walk around on the deck, some parts are obviously seperated, but on top ofthe stringers obviously it is still solid as well as up near the step up at the bow?
Can someone help me with the search feature to find some photos of the floor coming up in a 19'6 so I don't make it more of a mess than it already will be...I don't want to just start ripping stuff out the wrong way?
I will post some more pics tomorrow or the next...Lots of dry reddish colored wood flying everywhere when I cut the initial outline...

To remove the rubrail I need to pull the rope out of the center to get to the screws correct? They have bolts on the inside..that should make it as tideous as possible :D
I also noticed that previous rebuilds on here show guys using a grinder with a cutting blade to cut the inside at the floor seam to remove the cap? Is that correct?

Yes, remove the insert (rope or whatever) and you'll find the attaching fasteners underneath. Bolts? more like sheet metal screws but you never know until you look.
Cutting tool? Whatever you have, can rent or feel like buying. As long as you're comfortable with a cutting tool, then use it. I've seen everything from a skill saw, jig saw, saws all, hand saw or an ax. No "right tool" if you're handy with it. Remember what you're trying to do and use what works best for you. Skill saw lets you control the depth of cut but the grinder lets you get closer to where you may want your finished cut.

Couldn't say. My 170 (which I bought new) my CCP and my WAC all have/had sheet metal.
Like I said, you never know till you look.

Interesting, the entire rubrail and cap were stainless screws/bolts with nuts on the inside under the cap...makes things a bit tedious but at least they were stainless and had no issues gettim them loose mostly..and the onoes that were hard the bolt just broke entirely.
Hoping to get the cap completely off this afternoon and take some pics...
Anybody recommend where to take my fuel tank to get it tested and "cleaned"...hate to spend $600 on a new one if I don't have to....but I definately don't want to go back in a year or two from completion either? Thoughts?

Well, got the cap off...wasn't to bad
Starting cuting out the floor when the sawsall I borrowed battery died... :|
Will have to restart so to speak lol..
Never the less pretty happy so far..
I will say the she HAS been redone in the floor at least....there were some beer cans in the port rear section when I pulled the floor up...it's near a patch that was there, so maybe that was the only part redone....because I found nothing else in any other areas so far that is foreign..

I'm not sure what your plan is for the cap, but if you are going to add any glass or reinforcement to the underside, make sure you do it with the cap sitting with the same curvature that it has when installed. If you do it with the cap straight, you may not be able to get it back on the hull correctly.

I'm not sure what your plan is for the cap, but if you are going to add any glass or reinforcement to the underside, make sure you do it with the cap sitting with the same curvature that it has when installed. If you do it with the cap straight, you may not be able to get it back on the hull correctly.

I am only doing the demolition and initial San down etc...all reinforcing and finish work including the new floor will be done by the professionals.

Anybody know where to take my fuel tank..it's origional and I want to have it tested etc. to see if it's worth saving?
I am south of tampa about 45 minutes.
