Greetings boaters,Pete here reporting from Mecca,or the Miami Boat show, call it what you will, anyway spent the day there yesterday and had a great time with the Admiral, ate at trendy south beach sidewalk cafe after, nice day.For those not familiar with the show let me breifly explain the size of it.It takes place in several venues both in water and in and outside of the Miami Beach Convention Center. The main floor of the convention center is mostly boats and every boating mfg you can think of,with a seperate hall for just electronics and one called dive and travel, the great thing about having all these mfg reps all in one place is that you can ask them any qustion you want and compare products and learn about new ones with out pressure to buy. Then you can go upstairs to the Marine Mart where,if you want it they got it and you can compare prices to get the best deal, there are more displays out side the convention center and buses to take you to the in water display and mega yaght row on Collins Ave.,Never made it to that, would really need 2 days to see it all, heres some pics and vids,enjoy....

Five 350 Mercs on the back? I guess maybe I really NEED 1,750 HP on the transom of my fish boat. :thumleft:
That 482SS is sweet!
-
Hacker-Craft makes a cool retro boat - interesting price too - competitive with glass boats. That one in the picture goes for about $125K I think - which is comparable to similar fiberglass boats.
-
Awesome pics Pete!!! They were giving rides on a 29 Seahunt with one of the 557s on the back , check out the video. They are talking having two of these rather than three Yammie 350s on a lot of larger boats.

Terrific work pete
Thanks for the great job...some very nice rides there
-
Thanks for the trip Pete - nice job.
-
pete, the yellow "Triton" with the bubble enclosure....a submersible?
-
yep, they were raffleing off a ride,up to $2500 when I went by
-
How'd you manage to get Mike Carrigan to close his mouth long enough to get a pic?
And that Hydra-Sports with the "Jungle Gym" tower? I mean, nice pipework, but jeez louise!
-
I always stop and see Mike when at a show, told me a good story about you, that when they told you to find a $100 solution to a problem your solution cost a $1000,in other words he said that you were not concerned with cost, just quality, very nice guy always takes the time to make me feel important.Glad he found a home with Bluewater, they make a quality boat. :salut:
-
He lies!!! But then, he's a salesman...
And yes, Bluewater makes a very nice boat, they do a GREAT job with their rigging!
-
Great job on the presentation Pete :thumleft: looks like you two had a great time.
I get the general idea how a transom is built but how the heck does one hold 5 heavy motors

Now that's funny
I was thinking "Geez, is that what we've come to in functional design? What kind of fishing weirdo would buy that Rube Goldberg inspired fiasco ?"
Pete, many many thanks for you taking up your time putting together these photos & vids.
Capital effort, BIG THANKS from all of us ! :salut: :salut: :salut: :salut: :salut: :salut: :salut: :salut: :salut:

Glad you all liked it,if you love boating, the Miami show is something to see at least once.I think next year I might get a room and make a weekend of it. :salut:
-
Yes,
I went to the Las Vegas SHOT SHOW (gun/hunting stuff) WHEW !!! Sight to see.
Stupendously mind boggling array of products, displays, etc. The word was that Browning spent almost $200K on their display area alone. That show is a 3 dayer to see everything properly.
When I return to FL I will fer sure see you at the Miami Boat show. Thanks again Pete.

Great job on the presentation Pete :thumleft: looks like you two had a great time.
I get the general idea how a transom is built but how the heck does one hold 5 heavy motors
UNBELIEVABLE heavy duty construction. Transoms that approach 4" thick 1/2" plate aluminum sandwiched in the mix, 2" thick knees spanning the base of the transom to tie it into the hull, tops of the knees glassed to the underside of the deck, as well as plexused to the underside when decking the boat, and also probably some stainless turnbuckles tying in the engine mounting bolts to the stringers. Some really stout stuff.
Keep in mind, (5) Vrods, dry weight, is around 665 lbs. per motor, just just a tad over 3300 lbs. back there. The key is tying it all in and distributing the forces throughout the boat...
-
That 482SS is sweet!
:thumleft: :thumleft: Agreed!
Pete question about the photo of the quad white yamahas, was your intent to capture the quads or the lady picking her nose?

3300 pounds on the ars-end....PLUS the heavy-duty transom weight. Empirical questions....
They hold a chitload of fuel....but with that kind of stern weight....how are they balanced out? How much do they weigh on the hoof? And with a trip axle big-boy trailer....will a one-ton duelie pull it? And what is the beam...do they need a permit?

there is a thread on tht about a guy who wants to tow 8,000 lbs with a rav4 so i think a dually could pull it   ... anything over 8'6" needs a permit, we have one for our searay which is 10'2"
-
Hard to say...a 34 Contender with twin 300's, full of gas and a trip-axle trailer goes 12K.
-
Scott,
At Proline, our tow vehicle was an '05 GMC dually, Duramax/Allison 4WD, we used to pull our 35 Express, triple Vrods, tower, on a triple axle Myco with a pintle hook...around 18K lbs. Yeah, you knew she was back there, but no big deal...that Allison was sweet on engine braking, you didn't have to really plan your stops, if you know what I mean.
Hauling around the Doc's 28 Pursuit on a BIG Boatmaster dual axle (17" wheels!) pushes close to 12.5K lbs, with his diesel Excursion 4WD, have to do a little more planning on the stops. And, yeah, a little slow off the line. The thing you DON'T want to do is have repeated hard stops, overheat the brake rotors, introduce brake fade and warped rotors into the mix...
I just had a Pursuit 24 CC, twin 150s, T-Top, dropped off at the house a couple days ago for a re-wire. Pulled down here from Gainesville...with a V-6 Toyota Tacoma 4X4. And it didn't look like the truck was sweating...
Friend of mine in Orlando pulls his 28 GW with a 1/2 ton Chevy. Don't believe all you read on THT...
I've said it before. That Jimmy we had at PL? Could pull a house!!
-
Gotcha SB...but getting back to the 1800 HP outboard behemouth...what would you reckon it weighs?
I'm sure that it can be towed with something. But frankly, something that weighs 4X a tow vehicle freaks me out. Even though it may be rated to tow it.
-
Trust me Scott, hook up a GMC/Chevy 3500, a Ford F350, or a Dodge 3500 to a boat of good size, it's no big deal. 3/4 tons do almost as good. Hauled the Doc's Pursuit back to Tampa with a 3/4 ton Ford 4WD...didn't break a sweat. It's all what you're used to...
When I worked in the steel mills in Chicago, we used to get huge GE electric motors delivered to run electric blast furnaces. The total rig weight was around 105,000 lbs. So figure 10,000 for trailer, another 20,000 for the tractor...that leaves 75,000 lbs for the load it self...and it happens every day, all around us. Think about that next time you see a truck from a battery supplier going down the road...
-
Cool, I'm good with your advice. But what do you reckon the 1800 hp model weighs...for sake of discussion.
-

Around 12-13K...
If you're yanking around a 38 with quads, 5 motors, top, Myco triple axle, you'd be looking at 16.5-18K...
-
That's what I was thinking...around 17-18K.

Here are some towing capacities/comparisons for the biggest, baddest duelly pickups in the marketplace, from Edmunds:
http://www.insideline.com/gmc/sierra-35 ... -test.html (http://www.insideline.com/gmc/sierra-3500hd/2011/2011-heavy-duty-truck-comparison-test.html)
Only one rated to 18K is via fifth wheel. For towing horses or a huge multi-car trailer, lowboy, etc. Regular hitch towing...14K max or so.
So...and Bob, you know me well enough to know that I am not being argumentative....how did they legally get those big brutes to the show, without a Kenworth?
-
I keep saying you need that International CXT. 20 tons of towing power and it will look reeeeal good in your driveway! Besides, if you can afford 5 Vrods on your fishing boat, who cares about how much the truck costs?

To the shows, like Miami, Lauderdale, Annapolis? Boat haulers, plain and simple. Everybody does it. But I've pulled the 35 (in the almost exact same form as I described above) down to the St. Pete city marina launch next to "The Pier" from Crystal River, about 85 miles, with no probs. And, I didn't have a permit. Just hoped I didn't see a DOT cop on the way down.
She went back via the Gulf...

John,
Some people, OBVIOUSLY, have too much money...
-
I'm with ya Bob. Up here, the law makes a living on pulling all types of trucks for weight violations based upon their "weighted" license plates.
That truck John posted eliminates boat-hauling questions...at least the ones on trailers

Yep - the ones with 5 Vrods on their boats? But still, I think the record for boat that says "too much money" has to go to Stefan Gabbana's boat, REGINA D'ITALIA, with leopard carpet, marble statues and tubs, and more bling than (fill in the blank):

Pete, how 'bout some of the new ones from possum...for the spice look.

probly not,I think I've used up this months' boat allowance at the boat show!
-
I don't think she is actually "single digit cranial mining", just rubbing her nose or something.... but if she is auditioning for the third season of gold rush she's a good two knuckles deep!!!
-
Hard to say B...the only way to know would be a series of multi-second shots...like on CSI.
She did have a look of embarrassed concentration however.
-
In order to get the female perspective, I just asked my wife her opinion.
She said that the suspect was cupping her hand and whispering to someone...most likely talking chit on the guy at the helm (that would be her husband) for looking at a boat with "four of those motors"

Sorry Scott but that place was way to loud for any whisperin..just sayin'. :D
-
Gotcha. We may need to revisit CSI Miami, episode "The disappearing index."
