Title: Guages
Post by: Mark Sr on December 05, 2011, 03:19:19 PM
Now that I took my boat out yesterday for the season,I have some issues to correct.I've got some wiring to do and I want to replace my guages.I have a 245 TM CC/98.When you guys replace your guages do you try to find the original guages or to you use new market ones? I like the looks of the Farina guages. All input welcomed and pics if any. Telfex are another.

Go with Farias, Mark.  A better quality gauge, and, from what I was told, Teleflex got out of the gauge business, so what you are seeing is what's left from the last production.  And that I heard from my Teleflex steering rep...

Too bad you didn't get with Marc (flounderpounder) before his latest foray to MCL.  He picked up a nice set for Scott (gran398) for an excellent price, brand new...

What kind where they Bob? Do I have to get guages just for Evinrude?

I have Faria on my boat and they are great!  And no they don't have to be for a specific manufactured outboard, they are universal.

Thanks Blue,I was looking at Faria and there's so many different types,it's confusing.

The only gauge that is engine-specific is the trim gauge.  However, if you want to have "System Check" in the tach face, you have to have an OMC specific tach.  Faria makes these as well...

Mark, check out http://www.boatersland.com/faria.html (http://www.boatersland.com/faria.html)  They have good prices...

Bob,
Isn't there a seperate System Check guage (2") for Aquasport? I don't think mine is in the tach. I'll have to check when I bring it home.

Mark, Marc (FP) did a great job digging up my new gauges. Marc, thanks again friend :thumright:

You can call Marine Connection Liquidators, ask for Jake, and mention that you are a member of CA. They will happily e-mail photos, ship reasonably, and no tax out of state. Plus...when its time to order up....they'll talk $ if you ask. Gotta like that.

I have twins, the members recommended a tach, water temp, water press per each engine, plus voltmeter and fuel gauge. Single install would be 5 gauges total.

They had some beautiful white on white Farias, white face w/ chrome dials, black on black, and black face w/ chrome dials. All brand new.

You can buy them in an "assembly" ....already mounted in brushed aluminum, says "Wellcraft, Mako, Aq" etc. for quite a bit less than the individual gauges.

Then as Marc advised, you just remove them from the panel.

Let us know how you do.

I am pretty sure they have a gauge panel for your year, yours is the long one correct? Goes across the console like Pete's?  I may be wrong, but I think it had Yami digital gauges in it.  A picture and email to Jake at MCL can confirm that.  Their Teleflex/Faria gauges are as follows: Water pressure: $35.  Volt/Fuel/Trim= $15 each.  Tachs:$40 or $45.  They also have the original OMC tachs with System check, I think they are $89.00 (not positive on that one, I know their Faria System Check tachs were $89).   You don't pay for the "panel" or the labor that originally went into building it, that is free, you only pay for the components installed, and they are cheaper than you could normally buy them off the shelf somewhere in a retail store.  Same goes for switch and breaker panels, you only pay for the components installed in them.  You should take a pic of yours and send it to Jake and then call him, he's a good guy to work with.  Good luck
Marc

I got this panel already built and ready to install from MCL, great people, great price...
I had to do couple mods, transfered a 9 pin connector from the old panel to the new one, labeled each single cable that I had to take off and wrote in a paper where was it coming from and to where was it going. Also this panel is not plastic, the entire frame is aluminum so no more broken corners where the screw goes in.

Marc,
Mark's panel, being a '98, is the rectangular one that is to port on the console, opposite the glove box to starboard..maybe.  Damn, can't remember the year we changed over!  My bad!!

Your right Bob,mine is on the left next to glove box.It has 6 guages. My system check is a single guage. The switches are facing front on console which I don't like,I have to bend down to see what switch is what.

That's a sharp looking console.I like all the switches up front.

Mark,
Even when the console top was redesigned and all the gauges were in a single row across the top, the switch panel remained where it was, just like your boat...

Will anybody be making a trip to Marine Connection for the holidays? I'm looking for guages and switch panel for my 98 TM 245/cc.At least some pics.I called them today and spoke to Jake.He sent me a pic of gauges that not close.Just curious if anyone is going.I have all winter to decide what to do. They want $305 for this panel which doesn't help me.

I'm looking at the Faria gauges for Evinrude. For the guys that have replaced theirs,do you prefer the plug in type or the ones you wire directly to the gauge.hows the connection on the plug ins.Is there problems?

That panel is about $150, (give or take a few bucks) can't tell if it has a 12 VDC plug on the end or not.  That is the same panel I bought down there for my Osprey.  If you add up the switches and breakers, (I think they charge about 5 or 6 for a breaker, and 6 or 7 for a switch) you can figure the price out.  Here is the nice part... That panel is ready to plug into your harness... done... brand new wiring, connectors, switches and breakers.  Also, your TM probably has the silver/gold/black panel?? rather than that black plastic... they might have one of the TM panels there also, with the same switch/breaker set up.

Mark Sr., did you speak with Jake by phone?

He is very helpful..and/but he is a "phone" guy.

He has breakers cheap also.

I got a deal from him. Eight guages, $17.00 each on average including the tachometers. All matched black Faria, brand-new.

Maybe he felt sorry for me...we chatted a good while...but Marc made the difference there I know.

Gran398

Did you get the gauges with the plug ins or did you get the ones that need to be wired?
Title: Re: Guages
Post by: gran398 on December 09, 2011, 10:50:41 AM
This sounds crazy...but truth is I don't know!

They are holding them down there until I figure out my switch needs/console room, etc. Then I'll get a switch panel and they'll send me all of it.

But will be a few weeks...I'm in retail, so won't be able to mess with it 'till the New Year.

Hey good luck, Merry Christmas :rendeer:

The Faria gauges I have in my boat are the ones that are wired directly to the gauges but I run a Mercury. The gauges were not replacements, when I originally rigged the boat I used the Faria gauges and for me wiring them directly was not an issue.

Thanks!

I've never been there! Marc (Flounderpounder) knew I needed some things, called and asked what he could help me find. So all of this good news is because of him.

Thanks again Marc :rendeer:

Hey Blue,
I was just wondering if the plug ins were better for good connections and keeping condensation out.

Gran,
I always get you two guys mixed up because you both have great post and ideas for our boats.

A little info here on Faria, or Teleflex gauges for that matter.  The only plug would be the 12-pin (I think it's 12) deutsch connector for the "System Check".  The remainder of the gauges use the pigtail coming off the harness (have ring terminals on the wires) for volt, trim, water temp (if you have the gauge), and ground.

Hey Bob,

The reason I ask this was because I was on Great Skipper looking at gauge sets and some have the plug in type for all 5 gauges.

As far as condensation goes my original gauges lasted me ten years. Two winters ago I replaced the console in my boat and I also replaced the gauges so everything would have that new look.  There was nothing wrong mechancially with the ten year old gauges which were hard wired. Hope that helps.

My gauges are similar in appearance to the photo you posted. I believe they are the "Euro White".  With the white background, black alphanumeric symbols, and black bezel they look very sharp!

You don't want those.  Those gauges were special built for an OEM that wanted to speed up production time.  Note the pigtails off each gauge, they used to mate to a harness...now they don't, and you have to butt splice everything together...
